iMac: no cd boot

One of our campus computer departments recently gave our department a couple of iMacs, G4s. The swivel ones, not the CRT or the G5. I'm having some problems getting them to boot from a cd; they'll only boot from the hard drive and then get stuck at a login prompt.

I figure it's a open firmware issue, so I booted with option-apple-o-f, did a reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all, zapped the pram, in hopes it would clear our all of the settings and let me boot from cd or atleast as a single user.

No luck, however. Now it just freezes up at the gray login screen with the spinner. Suggestions?

I can boot as a firewire drive, however. That holds a little hope.

Re: iMac: no cd boot

If you hold down the c button as the computer starts up with the cd in the drive will it boot up from it?

Re: iMac: no cd boot

I tried "boot cdrom", but it pulls up the gray loading screen with a big slashed out circle. Evidently it wasn't happy with this command. Thanks though. Any other suggestions?
