People who double-click hyperlinks

Many of the people I work with (okay, all of them) seem to think that when a hyperlink is presented for them to click that they need to double-click it.  It doesn't really do anything bad, per se, but it sends an extra message to the server requesting the page and extends the load time by milliseconds (which, when I'm trying to show them how to do something, or where to search for something seems like an extraordinarily long time).

Still, it drives me bananas.  I find myself lurching towards saying something, but have, thus far, stayed my tongue.  Should I say something, or just let them blissfully double-click on things that only need single clicks?

Yeah, I know, not much of a rant, but it bothers me, nonetheless.

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

I remember someone a long long time ago complaining that heir mom double clicked on everything on the internet and it drove them crazy, too. Where do people get this habit?

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

My parents do this. The reason is quite simple: they see the action as 'opening the link' and being as all other 'open' actions tend to necessitate a double-click, to them it feels perfectly logical. I see where they're coming from, but even after being told it's unnecessary, it seems to be ingrained in their psyche.

Drives me up the wall.

My mom does that.  My dad probably does too, but I rarely see him online.

Windows. It's very inconsistent as to whether or not one or two click are needed, so out of sheer frustration one learns to double-click everything.

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

Even in Windows a hyperlink is a single-click entity.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one supremely annoyed by this behavior.  Now if I could just get my boss to pry himself away from his AOL email address (and, therefore, an AOL account--maybe now that they're free he'll see the light...

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

Ugh...My fiance does that...I have to explain to her, "Babe, any time you see a pointing finger, just click once."  She does this in Windows all the time in the Windows quick launch because she's used to doing it on the desktop.  This results in the program opening twice, which really annoys the piss outta me lol.

My God, it's an epidemic.

We need to launch a single-click awareness campaign.

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

Double-clicking a Dock item is okay since it won't launch the app twice or open a folder twice. In fact, double-clicking a link in Safari won't launch it twice but it will in other browsers like Camino (what I'm using now).

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

My mom does that.  I was telling her about a website the other day and she just couldn't seem to view it.  I realized she was typing the URL into the search box instead of the address field.  GAH!

But in windows, IE is also part of the file browsing system, and IIRC, you do have to double click to open files and folders.  So within the same program window, its not necessarily clear when what is needed.

And yes, this quirk drives me nuts too.

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

Staff in my office double click the button in Filemaker Pro.  When one of the buttons links to a different database, an error message pops up after the second click, but before the linked file appears and they all think it is something wrong with the computer and not their double clicking.  On one occasion when I pointed out the problem, this person dismissed it saying "Oh, it always does that, I don't know why."   They just aren't interested in making any improvements.

Re: People who double-click hyperlinks

Windows ME had it to where the icons on the desktop would just open up, as if they had the hyper link property, but jeeze, I mean you couldn't move anything....

My late mother...geeze, if she tried to open up a card game on the desktop, she'd double click, and sure enough there would be maybe 2 or 3 game windows...so annoying...

As far as on the net...anybody thats a boomer does it...
