what is the Apple X11 that is needed for GIMPShop?

I just bought a Macbook last night and I can't wait to start trying out some open source software that are available.  I came across the GIMPShop which I want to try before I consider getting Photoshop.  But I read on the apple web site that GIMPShop requires Apple X11, and I don't know what it is.  I remember seeing a package of software at the Apple store, does that mean that I have to buy the Apple X11?

Thanks!

X11 is an optional install from your system disk. Open your installer dvd and poke around, you will find it in there somewhere.

Thanks!  I searched online and found this information too.

Anyway, have you ever used GIMPShop?  Is it any good?

Im not one to say cuz I use Photoshop but I hear good things about it. While you are at it you should try the GIMP too.

GIMP and GIMPshop (being identical other then the UI) are very powerful, and once you get used to either one are more than adequate for anyone just wanting to fiddle with images. It's no Photoshop, but it also doesn't cost hundreds of dollars.

X11 is located on Disc 1 of your Mac OS X System Restore discs, there is a Optional Installs package (.pkg) that will let you install it.

GIMPshops UI is different? It looked exactly the same as GIMP's when I tried it...

A couple of other drawing programs (albeit a bit weaker than GIMP, possibly) are Inkscape (if it works for you), Seashore or ChocoFlop, if you can stand having GROWL installed.

It's UI is visually identical, but some tools have been renamed and menus moved and reorganized to more closely resemble photoshop, so it's UI is functionally different.

Re: what is the Apple X11 that is needed for GIMPShop?

I have OS 10.3.9 on a imac G5.  I downloaded Gimp 2.2.11.  I installed x11 from disk 1, but when I try to launch Gimp, I still get a message stating that I need x11.  I used to love using Gimp on my PC, but I can't seem to get it runnng on the mac.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you!  That actually worked.  Gimp opens and runs fine now.
