Re: Recall
Now that I've pulled my battery to check the Serial # I'm glad I'm on the recall. The battery is rippled. I have scorch marks on the battery and the bay. I also have two dimples in those scorch marks on the case, and two small holes in teh battery where it looks like there was either corrosion or electrical contact.
Phew!
And this is the 2nd replacement I'll be going through for this.
I think its good though that all the major players are getting in on an industry wide production standard - this has been the year of the exploding battery and nobody wants that in their computer...

Re: Recall
It's not Apple's fault. Sony should be getting killed for this one. But if you check out the link I posted Dell was getting blamed hard for their laptops catching fire. now that Apple (and others) are having the same issue it becomes an "industry problem" that should be fixed so no one will be harmed.
BTW i would expect fanboys to jump all over me. I know I am at a Mac site. But nothing wrong with stirring up a hornets nest as long as I am wearing a Bee suit.

Re: Recall
I've been calling it an industry problem for quite some time. And those that blamed Dell for 4 million bad batteries that Dell didn't produce are idiots.
I think everybody is on a Dell hating kick right now. They're down for quite a few reasons and that just makes them an easiser target. Though, they did bring it on themselves.

Re: Recall
So True
I dislike Dell as much as the next guy but I recognized it as the battery makers issue.
PS. While I questioned the validity (at least silently) the fiery images and such of Dells exploding, I couldn't help but think if try they're not a promising sign.

I'm just glad that one of my batteries is getting changed although it says that the other batterie's serial number is incorrect when I enter it.

I think most of those ppl were just kidding around. Even today, the PowerBook 5300 is still the butt of many jokes on these forums for the exact same reason (exploding battery). And that happened over 10 years ago.

So True.
And yet - not true. The 5300 never actually exploded or caught fire while in the possession of a consumer. A couple of batteries met fiery death in the testing labs, THEN the recall occurred. The 5300 was a complete POS for a great many other reasons as well.
While I agree that Dell is getting more blame for this than they deserve, isn't it telling that the majority of (only?) cases of these Sony Batteries going up in flames have been in Dell laptops?

Try again - I had to do that with the wife's 12" PB - the first round didn't qualify even though the numbers matched. I went back an hour later and it then qualified.

Of course it is not Apple's fault, it is Dell's fault.
Actually both Apple and Dell is partly responsible for the product which carry their label, there is such a thing as QC, is there not?

You can try to keep the battery.

I agree. I think that perhaps Apple and Dell are to blame, but only a little depending on the circumstances of the recall. Apparently this is a Sony-centered recall, and for this to have happened so suddenly, I think that Sony may have found out that there was some sort of defect in production that their customers (being Apple and Dell) missed because there was no way to detect it.
Of course we have no way of knowing the circumstances, so for now I'll say maybe Apple and Dell should have caught it before.
Oh, and my serial number on my battery is:
W75243QORV6A
Which unfortunately means I get to keep my battery.
Is there anyone else here who gets to keep theirs?

Re: Recall
i have a 2005 PB and already changed my battery (apple recalled batteries in '05 as well) does this mean my recall needs a recall, and I have to get ANOTHER battery?

Same for me also. It's been a strange journey for the batteries in my G4 iBook:
1) The original battery seemed to work ok. Then the recall last year...
2) The 1st replacement battery was faulty. I got about 10 months out of it before it died, and I used it within normal parameters.
3) After the Apple Store gave me a new one, it's been wonderful! Strange, though, that this newest battery (which I received in March) is still showing 100% capacity (according to the Coconut Battery widget), and it's showing the same full-charge capacity it has since the day I plugged it in 6 months ago (mAh=4551)
4) Now the recall...will the next battery be as good as this one?
Honestly, I'm half-tempted to hang on to this battery, since I've had such good luck with it. I'd hate to get another faulty one thanks to this recall.
Then again, I don't exactly relish the thought of my iBook and/or home up in flames, either.

I've still been using my powerbook's original battery. It only lasts about 20 minutes.
I'll happily accept a new one.

Wow, that must be a huge break for you.
I barely ever run down my batteries, so they tend to last quite a while.

Well, it's not like Sony uses one plant, and it would make sense for Sony to consolidate and or organize manufacturing differently for their own products. This stuff is common.

Lemme know what they say. It took my iBook info just fine, but my pBook says it's inelligible. I'll try again later as mentioned.
