Re: Pluto no longer a planet
Makes sense. The only downside is that they took so long to do it.
Now if they can only get the US to convert to Metric, we'd be on a roll.

Metric = suck
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

My car gets forty rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I likes it!
Seriously though, one of the few cost-cutting moves by Reagan's presidency was to cut the metrification effort in the US.
Oh, and I'm glad Pluto is gone.

12 inches = 1 foot

5280 feet = 1 mile
That sooo much easier then having everything divisible by 1000 and labeled with a standard naming convention.

It would take awhile to get a nuke out that far.

Yeah, we get it, its not big enough etc, but I grew up all my life with the "fact" that it was a planet. Since the fact was based on a human invented category anyway, and since the universe never changed or shifted, its really just humans changing their language, and I like the one I grew up with better. I will miss the planet Pluto.

I like the new definition, so I will be able to live with no pluto (as a planet)

No, humans originally thought Pluto was much, MUCH larger than we know now, so it was easily classified as a planet back in the day. As technology improved, Pluto kept "getting" smaller and smaller, until it no longer fit into the category of a planet. The definition essentially remained the same, but our understanding of Pluto has changed drastically.

It's not that it kept on getting smaller - it's that it is actually two object orbiting each other, a binary system - but not like a moon orbiting a planet, they both orbit a point between them.

I'd have preferred if they'd left it the way it was, but I understand why Pluto can no longer be a planet. Ah well.

Isn't even a moon orbiting a planet (like the Earth) technically a binary system, just to an infinitesimal degree?
Anyway, Charon is huge compared to Pluto, so I suppose that the effects must be quite noticeable.
