Hello Fellow RED enthusiasts,
You are receiving this email because you either scanned your badge at NAB in April, or have signed up to receive more information from RED. This has been the first official letter from the RED team since that scanning and sign up process began (because we hate spam as much as you do, and there has been quite a lot of press tracking the RED project since NAB, so we figured you have a pretty good sense of what's been going on with us. Plus we've been pretty busy around here building a Camera :-)
As many of you know the IBC show in Amsterdam is just around the corner, and it looks as if we will be hitting our targets of showing the first images from the Mysterium® sensor.
For those of you attending IBC, there will be various screenings of our first 4k images at IBC in the D-Cinema Theater, on the 4K Digital projector. Show times are as follows:
Friday, September 8th
@ 16:30 (4:30pm)
@ 17:00 (5pm)
@ 17:30 (5:30pm)
Saturday, September 9th
@ 11:00 (4:30pm)

RED's site updated - new pictures, accessories [handheld RED Rail looks fantastic], lenses [18-85mm, fantastic]
The images may not hit the internet but reactions certainly are.

HOLY CRAP!
And this camera, with a VERY good lens, is cheaper than a Varicam, which shoots the lowest format of HD acceptable for broadcast. (Sorry...I will not accept HDV as HD...any day of the week)
And that watch is only $1195...I think I'll get one.

Jim Jannard promises to upload higher resolution images once the RED team returns from IBC.

It continues: Here is an image that should get camera dorks going... remember, that's a 4.5K camera with storage and battery... all it needs is a follow focus.

Alright, there are new stills. [Best viewed at Gamma 2.2 and Adobe 1998 profile.]
For those who know cameras, take a look at the first image [of the Porsche]. Note that the hot spot on the flag in the foreground is approximately 12-14 stops over [and retaining detail beyond the pictured dynamic range]. It was shot at F4/F5.6 split.
Check that orange power cord on the right: that was not lit.
That's a 4K in the foreground. If you look on the backside of the scrim, that's effectively reading as hot as the element would from a camera perspective. That's detail you see, not clipping. Freakin' awesome.
For the girls, focus was set in front [on the hands and lighter].

Check out the 959 image again... I just noticed that the camera is facing directly into an open-face 4K near the car's left side mirror. Those who know current digital cinema cameras will understand how graceful that falloff to overexposure is.

First public 2K Mysterium frame grab.
The girl was blowing bubble with chewing gum, this is the frame where it pops. Notice the soft, film-like hand but the instant detail of the particles of saliva from her mouth.
This was shot 4.9k at 24fps in 12-bit color, downrezzed to 4k, downrezzed again to 2k, then converted to an 8-bit color jpeg. And no dead pixel correction. The lens was a Cooke 65mm S4 lens at about F4.
An 8-bit 4K image will be posted tomorrow.
Remember, folks... This is 1/4 of the resolution of the output of a $17,500 motion picture camera. This thing is the future.

Here's a very low-resolution frame, but it serves to prove a point: The candles are the only source of illumination in this shot. There were no lights of any kind. This was shot at about F2.8 and the gain was cranked in post. While it's too small to analyze the signal/noise ratio, Jim [the founder of the company and man in the image] says that the image was devoid of visible gain/noise.

Anyway, what are they using to record the images from this thing. It has got to be some sort of high-speed disk array.

It has an internal 32GB or 64GB flash drive [specs haven't been nailed down]. It also connects to smaller drives [that can be mounted on the body] that go to about 160GB and can be changed faster than film magazines. For the most part, they expect you to be shooting REDCODE [27MB per second, full resolution and colorspace] vs. RAW [4:4:4, nearly a half-gig per second]. They don't want people to have to use fridge-sized drives for this camera.

4K = 4096 x 2304
4.5K = 4520 x 2540

RED just had a break in and a prototype camera, laptops and data were stolen.
$100k reward for information leading to the arrest of the guilty parties.
Industrial Espionage...no doubt. Just after IBC and the BIG demo.

They actually only got away with computers, monitors and the CNC'd cutout of the camera and a few accessories. All information about the sensor itself, all of the prototype sensors and the prototype camera are safe.
