I don´t get why people have such a fear of spiders.  I think they`re cute little animals. I once held a tarantula and thought that was cool.

I just don`t like spiders like the brown recluse.  Those things scare me because they are so small and deadly.

I`d rather have a big spider than a small spider.  Big spiders are less dangerous.

It's likely genetic. Many of the things we fear seem to have actively hunted our pre-human prehistoric ancestors. This includes sharks, scorpions, scorpions, and possibly even snakes.

I'm genetically afraid of puppies.  There was an... incident in my family a few generations ago.

It still makes me shudder when I think about it.

Re: Spider! (he's our hero)

every once in a while (like 5 or 6 times a summer) little baby spiders hatch all over my room and i run into them and it's frightening. I hate them. But one at a time I can deal with it.

I sure do.  It's a survival thing.  We're wired to prefer things that look like us.

If it has 2 eyes, a nose, two ears and a mouth that are rougly arranged in what we can recognize as  a face, we're more likely to like it.  Four to eight eyes, or any number in between, no ears and no nose plus pincers rather than a mouth?  Not remotely like us.  We fear it.

When it has four limbs and a head we recognize it as more like us.  Any other arrangement is strange to us, whether we admit it or not.  8 legs and two body segments... it's foreign.

Everything about spiders is weird.  They move strangely, they look nothing like us.  They shoot webs out of their asses.  People can learn to like things like spiders but no one EVER starts out going "ooh!  8 fuzzy legs, how cute!"

If I find a spider in my house I let it alone, unless it's a poisonous one.  I like the fact that they eat insects... which I DON'T like in the slightest.  If we had a few big ones like that around here I'd be happier - the insects get big here.
