Apple cell phone is real and ready for production - analyst
...which it says is likely to revolutionize the handset industry.
I do not like the idea of it being a candy bar...

"Candy bar" is such a stupid name for a phone form factor.

Especially when we apply it to phones that don't fit the description.
Regardless, I'll believe the Apple phone when I see it. It's in tablet PC territory for me at this point; I can't even see the benefit in Apple making it without being a hueg liek xbox flop.

Flip phones make so much more sense, the screen is protected, and it folds up to more easily fit in your pocket.

I wonder if an Apple cell phone would change my opinion of cell phones in the way that the first Mac I used changed my opinion of computers...hmmm.

Sure won't.
Which is why they probably should stay out of this industry.

I think Apple could do great things with the phone. But my opinion is that it would be best to only enter the handset market now, and wait to develop a carrier service (if they could). They could use wi-fi in the phone at first and incorporate Skype-like features into iChat.

All Apple has to do is make a phone that gets good reception, is easy to use, has a nice interface, syncs easy and people will eat it up. The biggest problem with most phone makers of today is they try to slam as many features as possible with little concern to how they work together and how the reception is.

The reception is not a fault of the phone but of the mediocre cell networks in the US.

Some phones do seem to do better on our crappy networks than others. I do wish the companies would work on improving on both aspects however.

They've been saying Apple was going to make a cell phone for so long now that I simply don't believe it. That's why I gave up (even though my old contract was free and clear for over a year) and got a RAZR. I'll believe it when I dee it.

My T-Mobile contract is up in December, so I hope they do come out with soething so I can sign up with a different contract to someone else because T-Mobile's service compaired to Cingular or the like sucks here in Washington (state). I hope they get a phone out to Cingular before Christmas. That would rock.

Re: Apple cell phone is real and ready for production - analyst
As much as I love the idea of trading crammed pockets for one device, both my 20GB monochrome 4G (still under an extended warranty) and my prepaid Nokia cellphone ($15 every 90 days with Virgin Mobile) both work fine. As simple as my phone is, it's still overkill for me; I just use it mostly for a clock, as well as the very occasional phone call and flashlight usage. I dislike telephones in general, so the only reason I got a cell phone was because I started driving. As for replacing my iPod, a flash based device wouldn't have enough storage for my library yet. Maybe someday a smartphone/music player/secondary camera will make sense for me, but for the moment I'm satisfied with what I already have.

I like candy bars, especially when I drop the crap out of it, and doesn't break in half like a flip phone. I also like the fact that the phone does not have to be opened up. I used the RAZR for about a day and I hated answering it. It took more time to pull it out of my pocket and open it up than to just pull it out of my pocket and press talk. Sometimes I couldn't get the thing open because it was so thin and fragile. It really felt like it was going to break in half if I opened it too hard. The only bad thing I can really say about a candy bar is that the numbers get pushed if you don't lock the key pad... then all your friends yell at you asking why you call and don't say anything.
I think a nice approach to a phone could be a slider. But I don't think Apple designs have much moving parts, which is probably why they went for a candy bar design.
I just hope dialing is not like the old rotary phones. I know Apple has been doing good with the click wheel, but I'd hate to use the wheel as a rotary phone.
I guess they figure the screen can be protected with the help of a case such as the iPod.

Actually it is. My friend works at a Cingular store and he pointed out the phones that got good reception. They are the middle end phones right above the free ones that are simply reliable phones. The problem has something to do with power consumption of all the components in the phone, but i didn't listen when he explained it to me.

Depends on the engineering. The RAZR and SLVR seem to pass the tests at PhoneScoop that some phones with protruding antennas don't seem to pass as easily.
