17" iMac G5- Where is my bottleneck?

confused

Okay, I'm running a

Rev A
17" iMac G5
1.8 Ghz processor
1 Gig RAM
64 MB VRAM

In Game Video Settings: 1440x900 (Native) resolution, all effects set to low, no Full screen glow or death effects, etc. Basically, everything to enhance performance is enabled.

My processor is set to "highest performance" in the control panel

Addons: Titan Panel, CTRaid, Auctioneer, Perl Classic, Theorycraft, KTM, plus a few odds and ends.

Addon Memory set to 92MB

Only other app running (in ZG and MC) is the Mac Vent Client.

I average 10fps running around in PvE, 8 in the BGs, 6 in ZG, and 1-4 in MC.

I notice that my processor is constantly maxed, and only rarely drops to 90-95%.

Will adding another 512-1k MB RAM make a huge difference, or am I bottlenecked at the Processor/Video Card?

Thank you in advance for your insight!

Auctioneer.
Theorycraft.

Kick them to the curb. What are your "odds 'n' ends"?

Re: 17" iMac G5- Where is my bottleneck?

I should clarified a little bit more on the Add-ons

Auctioneer is set to load on demand (ie when I'm in town), generally not loaded when I'm PvE/PvP/Raiding

I'll axe TC

Other addons:

Shard [something] (Warlock Addon)
CritLine
CT Bossmods
CT_Mods package (CT regen, bottom bar, etc)
Baganon (and the bank one)
SW_Stats
Felwood Gatherer
Enchantrix

Those are all that come to mind right now, I wipe my Add-Ons folder after each patch, and wiped the WTF & WTB folders when patch 1.11 hit.

I have tried disabling titanpanel, all titan plugins and auctioneer/enchantrix for raids, and it did not make a noticable difference.

Thanks smile

Add RAM!  1 GB is just barely adequate.  That 64 MB video card would also be a good thing to replace, if you can.  Since I rather doubt that's easily replaced, just avoid LagForge and other high population environments.

Also, what are your graphics settings at? Reduce the spell effects if you are having problems in raid.

Re: 17" iMac G5- Where is my bottleneck?

All graphics settings on minimum, including spell detail. Every other option that says 'check/uncheck for best performance' is set to the 'best performance' setting.

Unfortunately, the VRAM is not upgradable.

Its not the city lag that bothers me so much, it's the "YOU ARE THE BOMB!" and being forced to sit out the Baron fight  after blowing up 4 felhunters and a few clothies last week smile

Thanks for the advice- any idea if there is much a difference between getting 1.5gig or 2gig?

I'm guessing 2g is better, but I've found that some apps, past a certain point, don't show any performance increase (e.g. Entourage is slow at 256MB, much faster at 1gig, but not noticably faster at 2gig)

Thank you all!

WoW will use all of 2 GB or more.  Having extra RAM means preloading textures so your machine doesn't have to stutter as much.

The Intel GPU with 64mb of shared memory. (EDIT Oops wrong iMac)
The nVidia GPU with 64mb ram. Still the weak GPU is the clog.

Improve performace by adding ram and move OSX's swap file to a different drive.

See, I guess I don;t see why you're having so many issues. I have a 1.8 GHz G5 iMac, using 512 MB RAM with few issues on lowest setting. The only difference is I have the 128 MB video card.

I use, for AddOns

Re: 17" iMac G5- Where is my bottleneck?

you really need 92MBs of RAM for your addons? i have my limit set to 48 and i rarely use more than 24. check out some Ace2 addons to reduce your UI memory usage. i can make a more detailed list of what i use later. gotta go now.

128mb, but what GPU? Thats probably why you're getting better performance. It sounds like he has the 1.8ghz iMac with the 64mb FX 5200, which is really a terrible GPU.

One thing I noticed that increased fps more than a little was dumping titan and switching to FuBar.

Yep, fubar owns, all the same functionality, less memory hogged. Good stuff.
