write to video
I have a finished sequence which I am trying to write back onto my video camera tape(DV). the timeline is active, select file, print to video, select elements to put on it, click o.k. to start recording, my camcorder starts up showing "record", the movie starts showing in the timeline,,,but when I rewind the tape to play it back, there is nothing on the tape... (by-the-way,, blue screen shows up on the camcorder as it is doing this, so I knew it wasn't getting it.) help!!!

What application?

Re: write to video
I 'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY APPLICATION, DO I HAVE TO DECLARE A CERTAIN APPLICATION BEFORE STARTING A PROJECT? AFTER FINISHING THE SEQUENCE IN THE TIMELINE, I JUST SELECT "FILE", "PRINT TO VIDEO,...." ??

Re: write to video
Jeeze, he's just trying to find out what software you are using to "print to video".
That sort of information is kinda useful.
But now I doubt he'll bother now. All caps writing is considered shouting and is rude net behavior.
Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.
Unless you become as little children, there's no way you will believe this crap.

Re: write to video
Yeah, no need to yell. In any case, if you're using FCP, make sure that in the Print to Video window you check Automatically Start Recording, on the bottom left.

Re: write to video
Might check to make sure your DV tape is not record protected. Also be sure the camcorder is setup for Firewire as the video input.

Re: write to video
Don't worry, you're just a talking head on the internet to me - no offense taken.
I don't have much experience with FCE [Final Cut Express], but I have a few guesses. First off, when you're playing your project in FCE, does it show up on the camera's screen? The first thing you want to do is make sure that the camera is set up to play the footage through firewire. If FCE doesn't know about the camera, nothing will happen. There should be some video preferences or setup somewhere... again, I'm not familiar enough with FCE to tell you exactly where.
Once that's set up, make sure that the camera's on, connected and everything's happy. Play the video in FCE, see it on the camera. Then make sure the tape isn't protected.
Give it a shot after all of this. Still no luck? The "Help" menu is actually surprisingly helpful. Do some generic searches... "playback," "write to video," "external monitor," etc. Just make them up and see what articles show up.

Re: write to video
Thanks for the help, i did finally get it to record back onto my tape, now i am perplexed by why a lot more space doesn't become available. When i trashed all of my projects and emptied the trash. my hard drive shows "38.28 GB , 2.95 GB free" and it showed 2.45 GB free before trashing everything. How do i free-up more space to use for my video projects?

Re: write to video
You might have just tossed the PROJECT FILE, and not the media. The captured footage is not in the project file, but rather in a CAPTURE SCRATCH folder on the drive you designated as your SCRATCH drive. THAT is what you need to throw away to free up space.

Re: write to video
Look also for render files. Those can get pretty big.

Re: write to video
Thanks for all the help! i finally got all the files trashed and emptied,, but the space available message underneath the hard disk icon still shows just 2.95 GB available. now,, at the bottom of one of the screens i saw during the trashing process, i saw 22 GB available..
how do i determine how much space i have to work with?

Re: write to video
The log and capture window (in FCP at least) will tell you how much you can capture.
