I know what you're saying.  I may still call it MacAddict for a long time to come!  "MacAddict" has attitude.  The name change sounds like it comes from the higher ups who want to attract a wider audience to bolster subscriptions.

Please don't lose the feisty attitude.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

This is my first posting here, but I am very familiar with MacAddict. smile I purchased every issue from the very first one until early 2005. I did not renew my subscription because with all the changes at MacAddict, I thought the magazine had really lost its edge.

I am hoping that the new Mac|Life magazine will be better and I am looking forward to seeing the first issue. If I like the first issue, I will pay for a subscription to the new magazine.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

Whazt's in a name anyway? Those of us who say they prefer MacAddict that's just because you're used to it. You'll get used to MacLife as well and defenatly if it's a good magazine. We need a better lay-out anyway, and a bit thicker is nice. I did like the size though.... it's funny how 80% of newspapers and magazines all over the globe are changing size from big Broadsheet papers to smaller Tabloid or Berliner size and MacAddict decides to go the other way (eg. from small to big). I'd like more explanation to this! smile

cheers!

Absolutely - all of us want MacAddict to expand readership and reach as many people as possible.  It just saddens me that it has to come at the expense of a kick butt awesome name with so much history!

Of course they want to get more readers and subscribers. The issue here, I think, is how they plan to go about doing that, and what might the new name reveal about those methods.

To me, MacLife is a bland vanilla boring name. It hints that the new mag is going to try to attract Joe-iPod User as its base, which in turn implies that the edgy geeks who composed the original mag's original base will be left with no cool Mac mag to dork-out with.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

It never mattered to me what the name of the magazine was. What mattered to me was that it was fun to read, and it had interesting articles. Remember, "This Old Mac?" the iBorg? all that stuff. I haven't subscribed to MacAddict in about six years, though. I also am typing this on my PC. You know where you can stick your pitchforks.

I also fondly remember MacUser circa 1990. Andy Ihnatko's rantings, a Balloon Help column that fielded questions about Star Trek, raw whimsy. MacWorld wasn't always watered down, generic blather either.

The common thread though, was that it was well written and enjoyable. I don't give a rat's ass about Bryce, but I'll read an article about it anyway if I'm familiar with the author and know I'll get a chuckle and learn something in the process.

One thing I don't see any more is the editorial pages - in the front of the magazine would be a series of 1-2 page articles from each of the staff, commenting on some aspect of computer use. Impressions from the last Macworld, "Ten things I'd bring with my Mac Portable to a desert island," "Life with a 386 ultraportable," stuff like that. Car & Driver still does it, MacUser used to, but I don't remember MA doing it much.

Just sayin'. shrug

Those edgy geeks are the internet (ab)users.  The magazine has old news to those people.

The magazine needs more subscribers to increase its ad rates.  And since the "geeks" don't subscribe anyway it is time to change the magazine to have more appeal to possible subscribers.

I subscribed from August 1998 until July 2006.  Now my interests are in creating music using my Mac.  And I don't really need the reviews of music apps because I can't afford a new piece of hardware or software every month.  Once a year maybe.  When I need info I will download demos and try them.  I trust my own reviews to be more appropriate to my needs.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

It's my first post, so I guess you won't pay much attention to my opinion.
Anyway, I'm reading Macaddict since the first issue, and I'm also reading Macworld since a very long time. I don't learn something in every article, but They intertain me. And like you, I turn to the web when I need more precise info.
You are there ranting about the lameness of those 2 mags but confess not buying theme anymore. No wonder Maclife has to change.
But if the present offering is not satisfying you, feel free to start your own mag, the MacAddict name should even be available tongue
For my part, I will be giving it's chance to the new mag (and yes, the new name is lame).

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

Although Rik says that all is well it still feels a bit strange hearing that the magazine will increase in size and editorial content. Especially since it isn't that long ago that we had discussions around here about whether MacAddict would go the same way as many other Macmagazines, if it would/should loose the cd and why it suddenly had so few pages and used moderately cheaper paper.

I for one will be very nervous through the whole first year. I wouldn't want to loose the only Macmagazine that I've been reading regularly the past four years. I choosed MacAddict because of it's wit and superior content over similar magazines over here. We only have one Macmagazine in Sweden and it's a very thin, quite booring MacWorld with no cd and a subscriptionprice that exceeds the one that MacAddict has.

I'll hold all my thumbs and cross all my fingers and try not to trip over my feet while doing so smile

That actually brings up an interesting point. Why did they start a MacAddict store knowing they were going to change the name?

This change had to have taken more than a few months working out all the details. The store is only a few months old iirc. shrug
