This change had to have taken more than a few months working out all the details. The store is only a few months old iirc.

For the record, the store was up before the decision -- or even discussion of the decision -- to rebrand the mag happened.

I actually feel excited to see the difference but I signed the petition anyhow.

Congratulations, we're officially no better than our counterparts.

Now PC/Computing is a footnote instead of being the spectacular, occasionally creative for a PC rag, publication it once was.

FWIW, I like the MacAddict name better than MacLife. But I'm sure that the new name will enable a broader subscription base. For example, at work we subscribe to MacWorld but not MacAddict because some felt the magazine sounded too radical.


As long as the great content remains, I'll be happy with the new magazine. I just hope it doesn't become too consumer focused like MacWorld. Keep some deep stuff in there for the hard core Mac users – I tend to like things that involve use of the Terminal.

One thing that would be good for the new magazine is to have some coverage every so often about how Macs are used in the workplace, especially when a Windows network is involved. I know there are several magazines out there for the IT world, but none that focus positively on the Mac.

I once worked for PC/C (albeit for a very, very short time), and I knew a few people there, so I remember the whole PC/C=>Smart Business change (I left a long time before it happened). SB's demise isn't as simple as you present it.

ZD was trying to jump on the whole new economy bandwagon. Business 2.0, Fast Company, Industry Standard, Red Herring, etc., were doing extremely well-- they were benefitting from the dot-com boom. SB was Ziff's way of getting in on the party.

Then the bubble burst. Business 2.0 was sold to Time; Industry Standard folded, Red Herring died (though it's now being resurrected), Fast Company restructured. And SB shut down after about 2 years. The ad dollars went goodbye because the bubble burst, not because PC/C changed to SB.

My point is that there were other factors involved than you indicate. To compare PC/C=>SB to MacAddict=>Mac|Life isn't that simple. They're two completely different situations.

Oh, and if I stare even longer, I can see Snoopy instead of Max. It's like he pops out of nowhere.

So what happened to that store owner in Idaho?  Was he assimilated?

Noow I see it. That blue pipe between Mac and Life is the rest. But what is the rest when you take away Mac and Life? Is there anything else than Mac and Life? Love, family, work that's part of "Life" and "Mac" thats selfexplanatory. I guess the pipe is the Magazine formerly know as MacAddict that does it's best to bind the two together just so that we don't have to do it ourselves...or something like that...
