Re: Should I get an Ipod (Or Is The IPod shuffle useless?)
Anyone heard of the iPod hack where you can replace the HD without screwing the iPod up, My friend has a 500 GB iPod and I really want to find out how to do this

I am pretty sure you cant get a harddrive that capacity that will fit into an ipod. and if you can you would have to pay out the ass for it.

Re: Should I get an Ipod (Or Is The IPod shuffle useless?)
I bought my wife a 60gb iPod. She never used it. It was too big, too cumbersome. Too complicated. She just didn't weant to use it.
So I took it over.
Then I bought her a shuffle. She loves it. Play or not play. Skip to the next song or not. That's about all she needs or wants.
Useless? Hardly. It's not my cup of tea, but she loves it.

Since I didn't comment the first time around...
Useless... Not!
I have the new Shuffle and it is great. Good battery life, fills with songs quickly, and tiny. My only complaint is that sometimes while I'm working, I accidently bump it, clipped to my shirt pocket, and skip to the next song.
I had bought the 512M Shuffle for my wife. She left it on 'til the battery was dead and it required a restore to get it working again. Overall, I'm more than satisfied with the Shuffles.

Your friend is a liar. The only 500GB hard drives out there are 3.5" desktop hard drives. While it would be totally possible to adapt the 1.8" interface, you'd end up with an iPod about 4"X6"X2" that weighs almost 2 pounds and has to be plugged into the wall when running. Now THAT'S useless.

i couldnt be happier with my shuffle, and i say that having owned a full size ipod as well. the shuffle is significantly more durable and the battery life is fantastic. i have over 60gb of music, yet im still wildly happy with my shuffle.

Re: Should I get an Ipod (Or Is The IPod shuffle useless?)
I have a 5G iPod that I use mostly for business trips and such where I will be sitting with nothing to do for a long time. I have my whole music/video collection on there.
I recently bought a new shuffle that I use when I jog. I have a couple of playlists that I sync with it; only music that you would want to run to basically. I ran with a 1G Shuffle until it crapped out, so it definitely wasn't useless.
Actually, the iPod that gets the most milage is my trusty old 30GB 3G. I have it hooked up to my car stereo for my daily commute (about 30 miles each way), and I drop it into an iPod dock connected to powered speakers in my office.

Re: Should I get an Ipod (Or Is The IPod shuffle useless?)
My wife really likes her iPod Shuffle. Its tiny, clips to her clothes, and holds quite a bit of music for short trips and jogs. I find the new Shuffle dock to be a step backwards, and still can't figure out what all the Shuffle's light codes mean, but it's not mine, and she really likes it.
I use a Nano for my bike trips and, really, its storage is overkill; I can't remember the last time a song repeated.
Heh, I remember when my music collection was 2 GBs. I had a cutting edge Rio 256 MB player, and Casady & Greene's Sound Jam had just come out at MW-NYC (where I got a copy).
Back then Ricky in IT had a 40 GB music collection (that's all the IT guys ever seemed to do was rip music and crack DVDs on their PCs; I had a Mac, so I never needed them for any actual work, which suited us all fine); it seemed to me to be mind-blowingly too large a collection at the time.
