Which modern US president are you most like?
So, I did a little quiz, and horror or horrors:
You Are Most Like George W. Bush
So what if you're not exactly popular? You still rule the free world.
And while you may be quite conservative now, you knew how to party back in the day!

Now, I personally think that that boils down to me liking Mexican food.
However, it brings up another question...
...if you could choose any previous president of the US to be president today, whom would you choose?
I'd have to choose either Thomas Jefferson or Jimmy Carter

You Are Most Like Bill Clinton
No doubt, your legacy may be a little seedier than you'd like.
But even though you've done some questionable things, you're still loved by almost all.

Re: Which modern US president are you most like?
I got Clinton for choosing "Character is a journey, not a destination."
Switching to "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction" got me Reagan
Choosing "People say I'm indecisive, but I don't know about that." got me HW Bush
Switching from pork rinds to mexican foods made me a dubya

a) huh?
b) do any of them deserve much praise? Maybe a few (I singled out Jefferson and Carter, for instance). But really... they are a rather motley lot.

You Are Most Like John F. Kennedy
You live a fairy tale life that most people envy.
And while you may have a few dark secrets, few people know them.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Re: Which modern US president are you most like?
Why, James Buchanan of course! Though hopefully with a sprinkling of Jefferson's utter proto-Renessainsance tendencies (LOVE LOVE LOVE Monticelo!) and those utterly fabulous inter-racial dalliances with Sally Hemingway -- I just know Tom and I would have had some fab visits to Paris.
Oh, and I'm drawn to some of the utter uber-paranoia streaks of Milhouse Nixon -- the sign of an utter genius in my book though he lost grasp on controlling himself. His visit to China was stellar. Kennedy I like but due to Jackie O -- sorry, but she was just the apex of fabulousness until Carolyn Beset Kennedy came along, and John John and Carolyn could have had the political world as their oyster. Loved Madison's estate at Montpelier but then it was always the landed aristocracy in Virginia that turned it effectively.
And yes, as much as I come off hating St Ronnie there's always this bet of me that thinks if I was ever conferring with Ronnie and Nancy we'd really get along... the Hollywood connection. Certainly with Nancy and her Joan Quigley fixations -- LOVED THAT!... plus she dressed so well. I frankly I could do some Laura Bush re-styling... she just needs a little and there's something there I like... hell, I'd eve like Barbara Bush properly -- that gutter mouth and mine in the same room would be the life of a great dinner party. Oh, and then there's Eleanor... VERY fab though a disastrous face which in the end didn't matter And I still think FDR was the best... he played thing wisely close to his chest and was very willy with his adversaries... completely strategically thinker.

Yeah I got dubya too. Pretty absurd quiz, really.
As for my fave prezzies, hmm ... I'd have to go with FDR (internationalist but not imperialist), Lincoln (keeping it together during the darkest chapter in American history), and Carter (best. ex. prez. EVAR.).
I think of FDR and Lincoln embodying best qualities of hope and optimism in the American character, but without the darker impuses. Not that they were pure of course.

Lincoln embodies a lot of what Dubya stands for. He invented the elimination of habeus corpus, etc. and stood by while the South was decimated following the war... quite parallel to what's going on in Iraq, I think.
Thus I personally hold back on giving him too high praise.

As I recall, Lincoln didn't do much standing in any manner following the Civil War.

True, that. But there was plenty of crapola during the war and during his brief life afterward.
In any case, seeing as he defended the rights of owners of escaped slaves during his time as a lawyer, one might rightfully assume that the slavery issue was not really his reason for the war, but was a convenient wedge issue.

I guess we're going off topic, but his reasons for the war had to do with US fortifications coming under attack and a commitment to preserve the Union.
While he may have defended slave owners as a lawyer, he was advocating for the rule of law of the time. His sympathy for abolitionists was the chief reason the Slave states chose secession, as it was evident for some time before they chose to attack.

I suggest you revisit your history. Reconstruction would've been very different had he not been assassinated. He didn't "stand by," he was murdered before all the Southern troops had even surrendered.
As for the habeus corpus, I agree that was dicey. There was a lot worse, such as the concentration camps that Southern civilians were subjected to. Not to justify all that, but hindsight is, as they say, 20/20, and considering the threat to the union and its founding principles, it's damn hard to know where the line should be drawn. Certainly Lincoln's steps were preferable to a Confederate victory.

Perhaps you are correct. I rather suspect that you are. But, might not this argument be made by a ShnickyShnack writing in these forums in 2150 about Dubya?
e.g., "Certainly Bush's steps were preferable to a terrist' vicotry"
And, yup, I already said that I was off base on Reconstruction. But, the prison camps, habeus corpus, Lincoln's fairly crass use of the slavery issue for other ends, and his general laying of the foundations of the Imperial Presidency are what knock him off of my list.
