I'm having a difficult time drawing any comparison between Iraq and the events leading to the Civil War, even for the purposes of your example...

Man you're stretching in your comparisons in a huge way. I see no similarities whatsoever between the Civil War and the present goings-on.
And, yup, I already said that I was off base on Reconstruction. But, the prison camps, habeus corpus, Lincoln's fairly crass use of the slavery issue for other ends, and his general laying of the foundations of the Imperial Presidency are what knock him off of my list.
It was a Civil War. There is a line, of course, and it can be debated whether he crossed it. However claims of "imperial presidency" are off-base. Power does become concentrated during wartime, there's simply no way to avoid it. The question is what happens after the shooting stops. In the event, the office of the presidency became vastly trimmed after the Civil War, and I see no reason to believe Lincoln would've tried to hold on to those powers.
