A few 360 newsbits

One confirmed only for Canadiens so far, one technically not a 360 bit at all...

Xbox 360 Holiday GRAW Bundle

During mid-summer, we spotted an Xbox 360 bundle on Canadian retailer Future Shop's website that included the Xbox 360 Premium console with Project Gotham Racing 3, three months Xbox Live Gold and 1250 market place points all for the same price as an Xbox 360 Premium.

The bundle never appeared in the U.S., which leads us to believe that the PGR3 bundle was an effort to correct for gains of the Canadian Dollar against the U.S. Dollar.

A revisit to Canadian e-tailers uncovers a new bundle available immediately on BestBuy.ca. The new Xbox 360 Premium keeps the same price and bundles in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and Xbox Live Arcade: Unplugged. Best Buy-owned Future Shop will sweeten the deal further this Friday by offering Splinter Cell: Double Agent for free on top of the new bundle as part of its upcoming sale.

Microsoft has made it very clear that it has no plans to drop the price of the Xbox 360 for the holiday season, but instead it may explore bundling options to make its package more enticing. With the Microsoft's competition launching a month from now , this could be the first blip on the radar for other Xbox 360 value-added bundles.

Microsoft Confirms Work on Next Xbox

Possible names include Xbox 3, Xbox 720, NeXtbox, Project Midway Redux

Although we are still at the dawn of the next-generation of consoles as we await the arrival of Wii and PlayStation 3, Microsoft is already looking at the next-next-generation. With the software giant's year-long head-start over its competition, its main responsibility is more of a maintenance and improvement of the Xbox 360 toddler rather than to be a frantic parent of a launch in its infancy.

Console generations are usually spaced five years apart. Even with four years to go, Microsoft admits that it is already working on the next Xbox, as revealed in a Kikizo video interview with European Xbox boss Chris Lewis.

"Of course we're thinking about [the next Xbox]. We're constantly thinking about the next thing, we have to. It's my point about complacency - you can't sit back on your laurels in this business - the consumer won't let you, the developers certainly won't let us. So that's happening right now," Lewis reaffirms. "We keep our development cycles very fast and high, that is the nature of the company and how we operate in terms of research and development, and that's no different than any other part of Microsoft."

Edit- another just in

Any more today? confused

100GB Xbox 360 Hard Drive on the Way

With Sony's PlayStation 3 coming in November with a 60GB hard drive on the high-end system, Microsoft's mere 20GB hard drive included on the $399 Xbox 360 looks rather small in comparison. That will all change with the new 100GB hard drive add-on which will be introduced during the first quarter of 2007 in Korea.

With so much Xbox Live content now available for gamers including downloadable music/video content and game demos, the 20GB hard drive can fill up rather quickly. And while we do know that the 100GB hard drive will be available as an accessory, there is no word yet if the hard drive will replace the 20GB unit used in the high-end Xbox 360 at a later date.

Re: A few 360 newsbits

if they offer splinter cell free with the xbox I may cave in and get one.  I was planning on getting one when Halo 3 comes out but splinter cell may have me buying a 360 sooner then I had planned.

I'm not sure if you're Canadian or not, but Futureshop is going to add Splinter Cell: Double Agent to the already awesome GRAW bundle free of charge.

I need to sell something so I can buy this bundle big_smile

And the 4th game in the series looks like it'll be even better (something odd for sequels; every single game has improved on the last one. Very few games can pull that off...)

That's awesome, and would probably push me over the edge towards owning my first console.

It's Saturday, and so far I haven't seen the GRAW bundle updated yet.

Re: A few 360 newsbits

I just posted my xbox on craigslist so I should have half the cost of a 360 covered.  now I just have to go donate some blood, and other bodily fluids to make up the rest.  with any luck by this time next week I will be playing double agent.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is the game I have enjoyed the most on the original XBox and the 360. I guess it is all that sneaking around. Would definitely recommend doing Chaos Theory before Double Agent.

And it should work fine on the Xbox 360 if it's on the compatibility list?

Only Doc can answer this for sure, but I'm guessing if he enjoyed it the most on his 360, it worked there.

Re: A few 360 newsbits

And in other 360 newsbits, Halo 3 passed its first online play trials with flying colors...

We tested Halo 3 matchmaking last night. A bunch of folks here, and a bunch of folks in real-world, top-secret locations, with regular intarwebs connections, played the first ever online Hao 3 matchmaking stuff and it was a great success. In early tests like this, you sort of expect it to be a crash-festival, and the test guys will just assemble all the failure data in the morning. But not this time.

...

All fine and dandy when you have 250k players, but last night we had about 20, so we all had a fair idea who we’d be matched against. Still, it was fun to see the user interface working correctly, even if we knew that some of the new features wouldn’t exactly be utilized by a grand total of 20 Halo 3 players. Also, for whatever combination of luck, bandwidth and new netcode, we all experienced LAN-like conditions – one of the exclamations in this morning’s post game water cooler chat. It will be interesting to see how the new, smarter code translates to real world conditions in 2007.

'LAN-like' is good by me. http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?cid=9092

Also, H3 info is making its way into magazines this month here and overseas, with the Dec. EGM having a 17-page cover article on it.

In the just-redesigned December issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (subscribers should have it any day now) a handful of editors took Halo 3's multiplayer game hands-on.

The result? A 17-page cover story and a three-week series of stories on 1UP called "3 Weeks of Halo 3."

Before all of that information ends up in your hands, though -- here's a small taste of what to expect from both EGM and 1UP over the next few weeks:

• What are these new Brutish weapons? What's a Spike Rifle...or a Spike Grenade?
• The Mongoose (the once-scrapped ATV from Halo/Halo 2) is back: Who wants to ride Brokeback?
• Halo 3 will have three retail SKUs: standard, collector's edition, and Legendary. Guess which one comes with a helmet and four discs of content?
• Adding bumpers to the 360 controller means there's some extra real estate for Bungie to play with. Now the left bumper reloads your dual-wielded weapon and the right bumper is the normal reload. What does X do, though? Mum.
• Starting weapon: Bungie thinks they have the "perfect" starting weapon in Halo 3. It's not the pistol, the battle rifle, or the SMG...and it's pretty familiar. How does the new Assault Rifle play?
• One of the new maps, Valhalla, is being called "the new Blood Gulch" -- but this isn't another coat of new paint on the Combat Evolved classic. This is, from-the-ground-up, a brand-new map. How is it?
• What if you could save your own movies from Halo 3's single- and multiplayer gameplay and then rewatch them? In Halo 3, you can.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3154702

I like all that, esp. recording your own gameplay movies. One of the weapons on the cover looks like the anti-vehicle Spartan Laser. So kewlness is apparently on the way.

There are other rumors, like a (paid?) demo in early '07... but that's enough shavings from the H3 mill for now, I think. smile

Speaking of, how often do they update that list? I am starting to consider getting me a 360, partly because I accidentally paralyzed my original xbox, and I don't really want to get rid of my games.

There were June and August '06 updates I recall. I'm sure there've been more that I forget. Probably a few more games will be added with the Fall update that adds 1080p capability... I'm guessing that'll come around the GoW/PS3 launch window.

Live was down last week for a day. That was in prep for GoW and other Holiday titles. No news on additional games, maybe next month. I want my two Mechwarriors dammit!
