Re: IE7 released

Heh, well this didn't take too long:

A vulnerability has been discovered in Internet Explorer [including 7], which can be exploited by malicious people to disclose potentially sensitive information.

Yeah, it did. Irresponsibly too long. When the first few remote exploits were found in Windows Defender the product had not even been released yet. This time they wait for the holes to get in the wild before they start warning us. I hope someone has deep pockets 'cause I see a wonderful class-action lawsuit opportunity here.

I think I was being sarcastic.

Except for the incredulity that MicroSoft got the release announcement posted before the first exploit was published. Of course, the actual download had not completed before the exploit was anounced. Still, it is an improvement of sorts. Maybe security is finally a priority in Redmond. Or maybe they just really rushed this one out the door.

Re: IE7 released

I installed IE7 on my work XP box and it really does look like they took a lot of shortcuts, especially with the icons.  All of thenm look stolen from OS X.  From the Print button looking like a shrunken Print Center icon to the gear symbol for tools to the OS X directional buttons.

All they need to do is move the Minimize to the other side and colourize them and I'd swear I was on OS X lol

I'm on a PC at work, so I ran that on IE6 (vulnerable!) and Firefox (not vulnerable), no surprise of course. I'll be sure to email the link to my boss. We were just talking this morning about banks that only accept IE for online banking services (business accounts, no less!), not to mention that it's the only option if used through bookkeeping software like Quickbooks and Quicken. He'd have ditched IE long ago  if it weren't for that.

Re: IE7 released

I'm pretty whoever found this exploit did so during the betas, and decided to sit on the bug until the final build was released.  If my suspicion is true they are just as much at fault for holding onto the exploit until release day as microsoft is for letting the exploit happen in the first place.

I do have a few beefs with IE7:

- Placement of the address bar is locked into place at the top of the window.  It cant be dragged around, but can be moved between the menu bar (which doesnt appear by default either) and the tab bar with a registry change.  You still can't move the links bar under the address bar (my preferred setup in Firefox & IE).

- URLs that pass login information no longer work.  Links like http://foo:bar@microsoft.com don't go anywhere, and if you check the properties of the link they don't display anything.  I remember MS disabling the 'clickability' of those links in an IE6 patch a while ago, but even with the patch you could still copy/paste the info in the link from the properties window.

- I liked the dialog box that appeared if there was a certificate problem better with IE6 - it had more information than the IE7 window on what was wrong with the cert, and had a button to view the cert detils.  It didnt take up the whole browser window either.  I don't see any way to get the details of the cert when that page appears.

Re: IE7 released

When I use IE 7, I don't see the menu on the left of MacAddict on the Macaddict home page. I don't see Home, Magazine, Reviews or Forums. Any reason why? Some setting I'm not aware of ?

Re: IE7 released

I installed IE 7 yesterday and had more crashes on my system than I've had since I bought the thing. That can't be a coincidence. At one point IE stopped responding, as did WMP, and the Norton AntiVirus tray icon put an X through itself (though I hadn't touched it)and the only thing that seemed to work was the Task Manager. It was almost like Attack of the Zombies. And put iTunes 7 and IE 7 together, it's Frankenstein meets the Wolfman. Not pretty.
