Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
How do you tell the differences between the MDD. FW 800 or MDD 2003 models?

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
The 2003 models (the kind I'm using right now) do not have FW 800.
They also had 1.25GHz G4's vs. 1.42GHz.

Question: are * Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)'s annoying because of their noise level? I 've read that before and was reluctant to buy one.

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

if they sit under your desk, they're fine
my only regret about buying one is not having it be a Dual Proc

Same here. The 1.25GHz (2003) models are fine, but the 1.42GHz models are nicknamed "Windtunnel" for a reason.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
I have a MDD dual 1.42 with firewire 800. I don't find it all that noisy. In fact my Gateway Linux box makes more noise.
I have a question about my Mac: is there any way it can recognize 4Gigs of (PC2700) RAM? I don't mind software, or even hardware mods, if that's what it takes.
Note that the machine recognizes 2Gigs, in either slots 0 and 1 or slots 2 and 3, but when I fill all four slots it only recognizes memory in slots 0 and 1.
This gives me the impression that it's a limitation imposed by either firmware or OSX. I'm running 10.4.8 build 8L127.
Please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong place.

According to my source (which can be wrong), that mac will only take up to 2 gigs of ram.

I don't know how this will help but, Yes, I have installed a logic board in my G4 MDD dual 867.
Easy enough after you have done it once. Mostly it is just finding the screws to remove. Look under the CPU heat exchanger (aluminum fins).
I really like the way those machines were assembled. Nice design, very thoughtful.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
Not really. The only difficulty is positioning the ports (USB et al.). Just to state the obvious, do not force anything. Remember this was designed for assembly by 12 year old Chinese girls (just kidding...a little).
All the wiring can go only one way.
It's a beautiful thing when finished. I will keep looking at this topic to see if I can help with any questions that may arise.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
I order an logic board and hopefully it will get here this week and work. Anyway, I notice what looks like hooks for a lack of a better term and 3 poles (for the cpu to go?). I was always told not to put the logic board on metal, so just a little confused on this one.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
The standoffs are positioned correctly. They touch the board but not the circuits on the board.
I will look closely at mine again tonight and describe what I see. Here. Not to myself at home.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
Yes the metal hooks are the standoffs. The logic board is insulated where the metal touches the logic board.
The insides of these PowerMac G4 MDD are beautiful. So nicely arranged with the cabling almost invisible.
How much are you paying for a logic board? Mine needs one but I really don't want to pay much for "antiquated" technology.
And I really like the Dual 2.0 G5 I got to replace the G4.
Once I am ready to upgrade all my applications to Intel-igent I will trade the G5 in on whatever is new from Apple.

I got the motherboard off of ebay for about $100. The online shops range from about $300 and higher.

How does the cpu, stiffener, and heat sink all fit together on the motherboard?

I won't be able to answer until this evening when I get home.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
Does the stiffner go between mobo and cpu or between cpu and heat sink? Does the little prongs on the stiffner go up (away from mobo) or down (pointed at mobo)?

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
It can go together in one way ONLY.
The plastic is between mobo and cpu board. It goes on the internally threaded standoffs toward the front of the case. See the picture here. The camera's flash spotlights the plastic piece.
The cpu card is then slipped under the 2 catches on the plastic piece (directly above the springy metal). Then press down on the multi pin connector to seat the cpu card.
Use a thin smear of thermal paste on each cpu. Clean off all old thermal paste from cpus and heat sink first.
Screw down the heat sink and you are done.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
Got a question about the video card. I took out of my QuickSilver G4 the Nividia GeForce2 MX video card and replace it with the ATI 9000 card a few years back. Anyway, can I put the Nividia Card into the MDD and have it work?

If it is an AGP slot card it will fit and will work.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
How compatable are G4 processors between various G4 models? Like taking a higher end one from a MDD or Quicksilver and putting it into a Digital Audio G4. Has anyone attemped this?

Generally no. I thought there was one. At the moment I can not find the web site and I can not remember which one.

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
I know the MDD can take up to 4 hard drives. So far I got two in there now. When putting in the other two, set it up the say way as the first two or different?

Re: Mac G4 Mirror Double Door (MDD)
Set up all four drives as Cable Select. And don't forget that you also have room for 2 optical drives.
