New Speakers?
I'm in the market for some new speakers to go with my G4. Right now I'm using the Pro Speakers, and they're nice and all, but after cranking the volume above 50% I start to get distortion and they don't plug in to my iPod or AirPort Express. Also, I want to get a subwoofer, since bass is important to me. So, basically, can anyone recommend any good sub-$150 2.1 multimedia speakers?
Thanks,
DC

Re: New Speakers?
Subwoofer schmubwoofer. Good speakers provide plenty of bass. Just get a decent stereo and plug your computer into it, end of story.
Might spend a bit more than $150, though.
edit: I actually have a pair of these connected to a mediocre stereo reciever/amp. Cost me about $180, iirc, and provides enogh abss to vibrate my feet and piss off the neighbors if I crank it up past halfway.
Subwoofers are for ninnies with tiny speakers.

Re: New Speakers?
well, space is a factor, I want them to sit on my desk (with the exception of a sub)
I've been eyeing the Bose Companion 2 Series II (if what you say about a subwoofer is true), are they a good choice?
Also, are a monitor's built-in speakers ever any good?

Oh... one of those aesthetic things.
idunno - I laid my apartment out around my technology shrine. Three monitors, two computers, a stereo, and a rack for other crap. My desk is by far the most expensive piece of furniture I own. It's also too large to actually move.
I have issues.
I would think those bose speakers would probably be a bit on the mediocre side, at least compared to what I'm used to. I can't actually find any real specs on the on the web site, though. Tey apparently want you to buy them on fath.

Re: New Speakers?
so basically you're saying that anything small that would fit on a desk for under $150 is not worth it?

Re: New Speakers?
Not that they're bad in comparison to other 2-channel omputer speakers. I just am a proponent of hooking up a real sound system to your computer, and getting noise like god intended.

In my humble opinion, that's a definite possibility.
I would be pleasantly surprised to find out otherwise, but my experience with computer speakers says no.
I got my current setup after being incredibly underwhelmed by a $100 set of 2.1 speakers from CompUSA. I don't remember who made them, only that CompUSA let us return them.

Something like this might work for you. Bose is, of course, typically overpricesd, but small components exist, that could easily fit in and around your desk. That amp looks like it would work well on the floor.

Re: New Speakers?
well, for most intents and purposes, my Pro Speakers have suited me fine. I understand your reasoning, and, though I largely agree with you, there isn't room for a stereo in my room. My reasons for upgrading are twofold: i need something with a stereo minijack instead of the pro speaker jack and a getting better sound would be nice.
So that narrows it down to what would be considered unappealing by you, but which is the lesser of unappealing options for under $150? Those look nice, but are a tad out of my ballpark.

I have never seen a monitor with good built in speakers. Some of them approach average, though.

Well, getting a pair of those Sony speakers for $50 each and a used amp off of craigslist would come in under your price limit. Otherwise, I understand that Altec Lansing gets generally good marks, and their "Gaming" speakers are actually fairly affordable - th most expensive system in that area of their website is a 5.1 setup @ $149.99 USD.

Nope. I got a $13 pair of Jensen headphones in 1998, sent in a $10 mail in rebate, never recieved it, and they've been chugging along ever since.
If I were to do it over again, I'd shop around for one with a thicker, shielded cable. I can hear hiss sometimes, and can actually make the hiss "move" by playing with the cable. But otherwise, these have been good to me.

Bose blows. Avoid them at all costs. I can post up an article that I read that tells you all the reasons why they're so horrid... but I'm tired so I'll do it later.
I like Klipsch a lot. And I have a great set of Logitech 5.1s (Z-5500s), but those are more than you're looking for, both size and price-wise. One of my friends has a Logitech 2.1 system that I like. It's balanced evenly, which to me as an audiophile (aka band geek) is very important.

Re: New Speakers?
+1 on the Bose advice. Generally Bose speakers sound decent but not for their price.
And dvpierce is right, you'll never get any computer speakers to sound quite like a nice set-up, but that's not practical. As much as I wanted to go for something like that I ended up getting a little 2.1 setup from the store. Life is about compromise they say.
I've tried a generic-looking black Altec Lansing set, and the Harman Kardon 'wine glass' ones. Both were ok but I am partial to JBL speakers so now I have a set of those Creature ones. They were like $90 cdn and sound great while taking up hardly any space (the speakers at least - the sub is big, like 9"x9"). I think they've been replaced by Alien-head ones so they may be even cheaper now.
They come in grey (not sure if they match all G4's exactly though) as well as white and navy blue. And in Dubai they have them in Glossy Black and the most badass Red I've ever seen in my life. I never saw those two in North America though.

Re: New Speakers?
I have a pair of those JBL speakers that cme with the older compaq monitors. They work enough for me, the only problem for me is that the built in amp is too powerful.

Re: New Speakers?
Where would you put the subwoofer? On top of the desk or under it? If the bass unit is under the desk the speaker system will sound pretty bad.
Just get some good monitors! No need for a sub. Although a sub will extend the bass somewhat.
M-Audio StudioPro 3 desktop speakers
And tiny speakers with a "subwoofer" are a waste of money if you want to crank up the volume. Get some larger speakers so they can move some air!

Re: New Speakers?
Okay, I'm now torn between the M-Audio StudioPro 3 (or Studiophile DX4, ZipZoomFly has the two similarly priced) and the Altec Lansing FX6021. I can get them for about the same price. Which should i get?
And is the general consensus that a $13 pair of headphones is substantial?

I'd go for the M-Audio, myself. he Altec setup might give you beefier bass, but the M-Audio stuff will likely provide you with better all-around sound.

I think everybody missed that. No, a good pair of studio headphones is quite a bit more expensive, and up to a point, probably worth the money. I know nothing about them, though.

Re: New Speakers?
Double up to what dvpierce said^^^
Speakers on desk, therefore close to your ears, get nearfield monitors. Those are speakers designed to sound good when you are close to them. Bigger bass drivers and larger enclosures equal better bass response.
Go for the M-Audio monitors. The biggest that you can afford and still fit on your desk. The cabinets are MDF which is much more rigid than plastic. And the enclosures are damped inside. Two things that improve frequency response.
Frequency response is not just how high or low in pitch the speaker will reproduce but how identical the frequency response curves are between the left and right speaker. The closer the left and right speaker are to identical the better the imaging will be.
Warning: hyperbole ahead
On great speakers it will knock you over how the sound is all around you but does not seem to come from the speakers. If you are listening to the speakers (hear the sound coming from the location of the speakers) then you have poor speakers.

Okay, I'm set on the StudioPro 3. I looked at the Studiophile DX4 but heard complaints about lack of grills.
as far as headphones are concerned, how is the Sennheiser PMX100? Bass is a concern, as is durability.

Re: New Speakers?
Headphones?
Same as any other speaker. Bigger drivers equal better bass.
My only hesitation with headphones is the lack of visceral bass. You will never feel the bass thumping your entire body with headphones. So the tendency is to raise the volume a little more and then a little more again. Very bad for the ears.
Sennheiser is a good brand. Spend as much as you can.

I'm starting to have second thoughts about the StudioPro 3. I hear the bass is weak.
What should I get then?
