People who nothing about Spanish ...
should not try to use it.
After visiting the vet, I ran into Jack in the Box for their tasty 99 cent tacos.
In front of me was a mexican man in his late 30s, speaking broken english but understandable.
The lady at the register, after he paid, said - "Thank you my amiga"
He gave her a really funny look, took his food, and kept looking back over shoulder as if he was contemplating bitch slapping her.
Anyway - I thought the whole thing was rather funny. He apparently didn't.

Heh, ya..lots a meaning in those little "A"s and "O"S.
"and it's not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Re: People who nothing about Spanish ...
Well, I speak broken Spanish and I talk to a lot of Hispanics that speak creaky English. Generally, we just cut each other a lot of slack and everybody gets along. They know I am a learner and I know they are learners. If anybody in the transaction loses sight of that then they can get worked up. The guy should have been smart enough to know she was making a mistake. But stuff happens. I have Mexican friend and I used the wrong ending on a word and she got insulted. I just pointed out to her what she already knew. English demarks gender a lot different than Spanish.

I think there's an ICANN regulation that states "all BB posts pertaining to improper grammar or language must be ironic."

How's this one - My family was in Mexico 10 years or so on vacation. We went to a very popular cenotes park. At the park they gave out life vests so the tourists could just lie back and enjoy the view. My father was getting the life vests for us and he wanted to make sure he got himself the right size. So he asked for an "El Largo" while motioning with his hands... The workers laughed so hard at him.

It's already difficult to get some jobs in california if you don't speak some spanish (mostly manual labor, like construction).

An appended a means feminine. An appended o would mean masculine. Essentially, she was calling him a female friend.
Regardless of how wrong it is, he should have understood that she doesn't know Spanish.

He may have understood that - but still been offended that she was trying to patronize him.

Then he was an smurf. I spent a few weeks in Europe this summer, and in France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy I was extremely happy when the locals made an attempt to speak English to me, no matter how botched it was. They may have screwed it up, but they made an effort, which they certainly didn't have to do.

My calculus teacher likes to go to France.
She told us that language was a problem - the places where she went, communication was difficult.
So she took two years of French - and went back.
She said at many places, when English wasn't working, she would try to use French - but her french was so bad that the people couldn't stand it, and suddenly, their English got better.
