INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

Well?  Are you?  It's coming!  You don't believe it?  Check out the high performance FAQ;

November 2006 The SMP client is now looking good enough that we are starting a more broad alpha test outside of Stanford. If that looks good, we will move to a broader beta test of this new client.

Don't get caught with your processors down!  See you there!  smile

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

After reading the availible information on the SMP client, I still don't know very much about it. It's probably just me not being able to wrap my brain around it. All that I can understand is it's for DP and dual core machines running OSX (right now). But, does it only work on the Intel processors, or will it support the PowerPC's as well. This and the GPU client would help my brother's Intel iMac, but what about my DP G4? Am I to be left in the dust?

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

Ok, I've read a little more about it now!

Anyways, I've noticed that this client is now available as a public beta for the Intel Macs with dual core and DP dual core machines. They say that there might be some issues with the single dual core processors right now, and they strongly suggest only using the beta if you have a DP dual core Mac Pro.

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

Here is my Quick Fold installer for the SMP beta.

Edit: this may not be of any use, since there is now an installer provide by Stanford on the download page.

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

I have installed the SMP client on
1 Mac pro quad...  this runs about 4 to 5 minutes per percent
1 iMac core duo  ...about 9 minutes per percent
1 iBook core duo ....about 10 minutes per percent ...fans run at high speed continuously
1 macbook pro core 2 duo.....about 8 to 9 minutes per percnet and fans run at high speed continuously

I have noticed a bit less than 10%  failure of units to complete
at which point the results seem to be returned and partial points are awarded and a new unit is loaded
All single processor dual core units show 4 lines of folding in the activity monitor??
Heck

This sounds right, Heck !

Keep us informed.    What's your username ?   On MacAddict4Life Team ?

I'm really surprised that it runs on the iBook ?    Not a Macbook ??

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

My user name is  theckerman
I will say that in less than a month I have gone from about 4300 on the overall folding list to about 2900.  Taat is all due to adding about 7 SMP machines to my collection.  And most of those only fold at night.

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

In November I racked up slightly less than 3000 points using the old client, and now using the SMP client I turned in 32000 this December, a 10X increase, so this thing is incredibly fast eek

Re: INTEL MAC FOLDERS: Are you SMP ready?

I was able to add two more macbooks and now my ranking is about 2750.
The big jump is due just as much to the tremendous amount of points recieved from one work unit.  The p3027_SMP-nsv-03 work unit is worth 716 points for each completed unit
and I have already turned in 27 of those  and 42 of the P3022 which is worth 658 points per unit.
An iMac may be able to knock out a unit every 16 to 18 hours if it isn't working on anything else.  A MacPro may get that time down to  8 hours depending on the unit.
