Corona

I'v been drinking Corona lately. I've noticed when i'm someplace or someones house and i'm served Corona, a slice of lime is automatically stuffed into the bottle, unless i think quick enough to say no lime. When i say no lime, the reaction i get issurprise. When i was in Mexico, lime wasn't even offered. So, what's the story with the lime?

Re: Corona

It's an attempt at a tropical feel.  It fails.

Better yet, what's the story with willingly drinking Corona?

Negra Modelo, sí.  Dos Equis, sí.  Tecate, sí.  ¿Corona?  No bebería esa con su hígado.

Re: Corona

Coronas a nice light beer when i just want something to drink that isn't water or soda. The beer i like the most at the moment is Maudite, but it's a strong beer and i don't always want to drink it.

Re: Corona

Corona must be cold to the point of ice forming in the beer.
otherwise, lime is needed.

Re: Corona

I recommend Tecate, then.  Fairly light.  Good flavor.  Far better than Corona.

And, for whatever it's worth, the way I've always had Tecate served in Mexico was in a can, with salt and a lime.

Re: Corona

Have you been saving that zinger for an appropriate time, Alien? wink

Yeah, Corona with lime wedge appears to be a US advertising convention only.  I've never automatically gotten a lime with it south of the border either.

As a mass produced beer its OK.  Its certainly better than Budweiser.  However I typically only buy micro-brewery beers these days.

Re: Corona

My choice of a lighter beer nowadays is Harps. I used to drink Dos Equis back in the day.

Rumor has it, the lime was originally intended to disinfect the rim of the bottle and or to keep flies away. Although I don't think anyone knows for sure.

I've never tried tecate but the other two are different styles of beer, so suited for different situations.

I'll willingly drink corona, so long as I'm not paying for it.

these are the most common theories I have heard as well with the flies being the more popular of the two.
It seems a bit odd that all of the Mexican guys I work with at the restaurant will never choose Corona if they are buying. But when they drinkg it they also use the lime

Re: Corona

I actually like a lime in my Corona. What I do (and bar tenders hate this, but I tip) is push the lime all the way down into the bottle. Most people just run it around the rim and take it out.

Re: Corona

Corona is a nice beer to have at the end of a hot day.

I tend to like a good Pale Ale when I just want a beer, or am at a bar, or eating a meal.

Re: Corona

Listen, Justine...forget these guys! smile

Squeeze the lime juice into the beer. You can push the wedge into the bottle then, if you want.
It taste good!
I drink Corona light at home without the lime, that's too much trouble to cut up a lime to just down a cold one, but at a resturaunt or bar, I want the lime...is good!big_smile

Re: Corona

I do enjoy Corona quite a bit (I am not a beer aficionado at all, it works for me) and whether I want lime depends on my mood.  Yazoo beer is my other favorite.  I believe it's made here in Nashville.

I've been told that when you push the lime in they can't reuse or recycle the bottle.

I imagine that lime gets vaporized during recycling.

I've tended bar for a few years both out west and on the east coast and have never seen or heard of a bartender care what you do with the lime, as long as you don't throw it at any one. Of course if you tip enough... wink

Re: Corona

I personally like Corona.  I am one of the people who pushes the lime wedge right into the bottle.  And then I spend the rest of the evening telling all the beer snobs around me to smurf off.  What is it about Corona that brings the beer snobs swarming out of the woodwork?  Whenever I drink it, I get a lot of the comments that have already been stated.

Mainly, I get the, "No one in Mexico drinks Corona."  "Corona is the Bud Light of Mexican beer."  "Here are a bunch of more expensive Mexican beers that you should drink instead."  "Mexicans make fun of stupid gringos who drink Corona."  Listen, jerkface.  I'm not drinking it because it's Mexican, nor do I care what you or your Mexican buddies think.  I've tried the other options you just named, and didn't like them as much.

The point is, don't drink your beer based on other people's opinions.  Try stuff, and if you like it, drink more of it.  End of story.

Also, I've found that beer snobs are usually the first people in line to make fun of wine snobs.  Just an observation.
