Lotsa stuff next week
From the Bungie Weekly Update:
If you thought there was a lot of Halo information last week, wait ‘til next week. A bunch of stuff is going down to celebrate the 5th anniversary of a little game we like to call Halo. In November 2001, Halo launched alongside the Xbox console, and the rest is history. Next year, Halo 3 will conclude the story arc begun all those years ago and next week, we’ll take a long lingering look at the series to date. There will also be some pretty BIG surprises and maybe announcements. Who can say?
Hey, ladies. Yeah, I’m talking to you, ladies. It has come to my attention that a significant chunk of our playership is female. I myself am constantly pooned and then humped by ladies. That is not sexy like it sounds, btw. It’s humiliating. Anyway, one of the things we’re looking at for Halo 3 multiplayer (Master Chief is all man) is adding a female voice to the Spartan character should you choose it as part of your custom character.
If we do it, it won’t be comical, stereotypical or insulting – we’ll pick a great, strong female actress who can pull off bloodcurdling death cries and rattles. And we’re not promising anything, we’re just trying to gauge interest. If you girls think it would be cool, then comment in the forums, spam me with PMs or start a petition on your own sites and forums. Then we’ll have to listen. If you think it’s pointless and patronizing and you’re happy just being a dude, then say so.
If you ARE a dude, we don’t care what you think, because we’re not asking you. Anyone who says anything stupid or sexist in the discussion forum will be megabanned.
Ghost of Onyx is the new Da Vinci Code. Kinda. Our latest Halo novel is swimming with the sharks in the deep end of the book sales pool.
The book is currently number 13 on the NYTimes Bestseller list (11.19.06) (paperback fiction category) of which the top 15 are officially bestseller status – and we’re still trying to figure out if this is the first video game novel to ever break the NYT list.
A short interview with author Eric Nylund follows. I've read it; I will say that, altho the 'sword' connection (from the H3 'Announce' trailer) derives somewhat from things mentioned in '99's Cortana Letters, you'll have to read the book to find out what 'shield' means. (Capsule review: we've read some of this before, Nylund's writing style is about out of new wrinkles, and the start's a bit slow- but around the time you might otherwise get a bit bored, it picks up and keeps getting better. The Forerunner stuff is page-turner material and hints at a lot of the directions H3 will take- which reminds me, I just picked up the Dec. EGM with its 17 pages of H3 coverage. W00ts!)
Eric took a moment to chat with us about the success of the latest novel, in between sessions of rolling around in piles of money and having his car soapily-washed by Salma Hayek and Jessica Simpson.
Yo Eric, How has the reader reaction been to Ghosts of Onyx?
I’ve gotten a TON of email from readers. 99% of it is overwhelmingly positive with most people buying it and reading it in a single evening! The most gratifying thing is hearing back from the younger readers who tell me that normally they don’t like to read at all, but the HALO books are an exception.
To be fair, there have been a few negative things posted on the various boards. I’m constantly amazed by the stuff people say on the boards…varying from a collective intellect of dazzling sophistication—to random, near incomprehensible rants from Zanders- er, slightly over-stimulated kids who mighta drunk too much chocolate milk.

What’s the biggest complaint you’ve received?
Readers wanting more. “What happens next ?” “Why is the novel (E.N.-- 95,000 words long, btw) so !&#%^ short?! Typos.
Typos, misspellings, malaprops and all fer sure. Nothing fatal, but a few funnies.

Re: Lotsa stuff next week
Yeah. Icks and I've way too busy way too long; I haven't even fired up the PC to play anything whatsover in, like, 9-10 months. Need posting, a fireplug, and peeps out there playing to inject some interest back into the game; we're just poorly fixed to do it now.
Anyway, a prequel to tomorrow's anniversary:
In this, the week celebrating the fifth anniversary of the release of Halo for Xbox, we asked a few of our media chums what they think about Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3 – and what they’re most looking forward to in the next installment. Oh and tomorrow? Boxors will be Roxored.

Sounds cool.
I haven't played in months either. DIGI keeps poking me to play but I misplaced the disk again. I swear I'd lose my head if tBC hadn't screwed it back in.

Hio. Surprised this is up and alive a little bit, but still. I'm still around and play here and there, but not much time on my hands and there are still a few people who sirf the pubs who should be executed. I work @ Disneyland Resort now as a full time photographer which causes the lack of time.

Re: Lotsa stuff next week
Howdy back, Digi. As above, several of us have been combinations of (too) busy, waiting to finish system upgrades, and doing GoW on XBL to really do Halo on MA3. I think we're kind of in idle mode now, waiting on changes, but Halo 2 Vista- via PC or Bootcamp, whichever- should renew some MA Halo interest, early '07 at the latest.

I hear that. Still, that's the next step, the foreseeable infusion of new energy. It's not clear what MA3 will be doing about that situation, or when, and for that matter the franchise runs thru Halo 3. Sooner or later you'll catch up, and the clan'll still be here. We didn't die when H2 came out for the 'Box.
Maybe you can afford a 360 at some point, esp. as the price drops, quite likely before H3. $360 << $Mac Pro

You can't kill what is already dead.
Actually I intend to purchase a 360 and Mac Pro by next winter. The 360 will probably come much sooner.

Hey, we're not dead. Soon as I finish building out my new dual-core/X1900XT rig and install the router, you'll see! We're a Norwegian Blue... ready to muscle up to the bars and VOOM!
Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my 4,000 volts.
(Really, have you kept track in Games? Halo 2 is really getting pimped out for Vista. Vs. just running at higher res on the 360... no comparo).

Cool beans. Halo 2.5 and 3, here you come. See you there... and who says it's not [MA] if it's not MA3? It's the playaz who count.

Pining for the fields?
I don't want to sound like a dick but, ah, it seems as though you are always working on your rig. Do you keep upgrading every week or does the silly PC crash?

They also pimped out Halo 1 for PC/Mac so I am not surprised they are doing the same for Halo 2. I wonder if they are adding new guns. Maybe I should look instead of ask.

Re: Lotsa stuff next week
I'm always pining for the fjörds.
Actually I'm always looking for time to work on it. I'm disabled, and of the 3 humans and 4 cats here a few years ago, one of each is still alive. Not much 'spare' time or energy... that's why I was never on that much even in the clan's heyday, and retired from Modding.
Most of this or more is in one or another thread in Officers, so I thought you knew.
From what I can tell, Mac Halo still doesn't equal Halo PC. It'll be interesting to compare Halo PC's upgrades with H2... they may not push the envelope as hard, but it's more comprehensive, e.g. Doppler shifting of engine sounds, going back to source art etc. It'll also have native widescreen support up to 1920x1200, so I'll have 16*12 and 1680x1050 available, depending on mood. My moods could use improving lately, so that's good.
The big upgrade came when some of my inheritance finally payed out after over a year's wait, the recent dual-core I did because that line (Socket 939) is being phased out. Last chance. Coulda, woulda waited, but when they're gone, they're gone.

Re: Lotsa stuff next week
Info about H2V is scattered all thru Games since early this year, but here's a choice bit from Oatmeal's 'Halo 2 for Mac' thread:
How do visuals and audio compare between Halo 2 for Windows Vista and the Xbox versions?
The quality of H2V scales with the hardware it has available. This will be the first time Halo 2 fans can play the game natively at resolutions like 1080p or even higher. The base art and audio from the Xbox has been re-used, with some retouching to help the game shine on high-end PC equipment. Audio will also scale with the equipment of your PC, and the game supports 5.1 surround sound. Suffice it to say that Halo 2 has never looked better and playing the game at 1920x1200 is a thing of beauty.
Do you plan to enable anti-aliasing? Other visual features?
Halo 2 for Windows Vista makes use of several DirectX 9 features such as edge anti-aliasing, anisotropic texture filtering, enhanced resolution shadow buffering, additional dynamic shadows, improved normal map filtering, parallax mapping, and per pixel specular mapping.
Why will Halo 2 for Windows Vista not support DX10?
Halo 2 will certainly support DX10 graphics cards but the game itself is not being re-written to specifcally take advantage of upcoming DX10 features. The more robust your graphics card, the more visual features and fidelity you will be able to enjoy.
http://www.macaddict.com/forums/post/1309600#p1309600
I'm also especially looking forward to them bumping LOD from rather severe to max, 'cinematic quality,' where Level of Detail in objects and textures is maintained to far away, eliminating that annoying model popping and keeping e.g. bipeds and foliage from becoming stick figures at moderate distances and invisible beyond that, so that an ally with a Sniper sometimes engages an enemy you can't even see, regardless of resolution. Framerate is being decoupled as before, and 60 f/s is often mentioned. The texture cache is gone so the cutscenes don't pop, and there's a boatload more fixes/ improvements I'm forgetting. Google the subject at Bungie.net or HBO; there've been a number of articles... oh yeah; like HPC and unlike either 'Box version, DX9 floating-point-accurate color & per-pixel everything. Updated shaders. Sweet.
I've been expecting a 360 version (the rumor mill now dubs that 'Halo 2.5') to come from the H2V work for ages. The heavy lifting'll have been done for the Vista version, so why not a few more tweaks for a 360 version? Money in the bank.
Edit:
Will H2V add new weapons or vehicle types?
Adding a new weapon or vehicle to the existing Halo 2 campaign or multiplayer maps could cause them to play in ways Bungie didn’t intend, and the team plans to stay true to the original Halo 2 experience. However, user-created custom content doesn’t have this problem, and the team may offer new gameplay elements through the H2V map editor. We’ll announce more when we’re ready.
No new guns, but a full, real editor included- Guerilla, Sapien, the real authentic deal. Jeap can go nuts. (Counting on it, jeap

It is weird how it sounds like fjords but on some sites they say fields.
