Borat isnt just "making fun of people," he exposes hatred and racism. And personally, I think that getting punched in the face for that should be expected. And that some people would think it was great that he got punched for it is also something I expect. Because a lot of people are stupid hateful jerks.

When the Black Knight lost his arm there was total silence in the theater.  Then he lost another arm and there were gasps from the crowd.

What was the prevalent culture at the time?  Vietnam.  Continuous coverage of the troops returning home missing limbs and being maimed in the field.  It was a tremendous hot-button issue hanging over the collective psyche of everyone at the time, and the "Holy Grail" audience didn't know how to react.

At first.

People began to chuckle.  The knight wasn't feeling any pain, and he just kept coming at King Arthur.   "What are you going to do, bleed on me?" got some laughs.  Then the knight lost a leg and people began to ease back into being comfortable.  He described it as though something settled in people as they finally, at the sight of the ludicrously determined one-limbed knight, began to realize "all right, it's ok to laugh at this." 

Then they sank back into the movie enjoyed it.

The prevalent culture now?  We're totally locked into political correctness, and this (satire though it was) went totally against the PC atmosphere.  He was getting along great with Stewart until the fact that he was a Jew came up and suddenly everything went awkward.

Worse, we fought a tremendously costly war against people who were trying to wipe out Jews (WWII) and despite how much time has passed since then we're still not quite comfortable with people having a go at Jews as a whole... not to mention  that we're at war with groups of people whose ideology calls for the "death of Israel." 

I'm betting that it was another one of those "are we allowed to laugh at this?" kind of moments.  It didn't go on for long enough to let the audience resolve their conflicted senses of humor and political correctness.
