Wow, that's giving a whole hell of a lot of credit to someone who shtick consists of annoying and embarrassing unsuspecting people in order to get a laugh.

Case in point, the Virgina rodeo and the frat boys in his movie. You mean the ones he had to apparently get drunk before getting consent on? If that doesn't fly with sex, it shouldnt fly with release forms.
Haven't seen the movie have you?
Ya, he might owe those guys royalties or something, nevertheless, a drunk mouth speaks a sober mind.
Anyone who's every lived in campus housing has met some variation of those guys several dozen times. I can't say that I fault Sacha Baron Cohen for highlighting the idiocy of those morons.

No doubt, this thread is getting fairly ridiculous now, but I would tend to agree with StaticAge. That movie didn't get really good until he started exposing the idiots of the world.
That and the nude wrestling. The nude wrestling was simply insane.

You'd be surprised. They can actually be quite sensual.

Well you could just act like a normal person, and not go out of your way to be a jackball to other people. Especially people you dont know.
You know, politeness, courtesy, that kind of thing.

You don't think that guy leaves the hotel or apartment dressed like that ready for an ass kicking every day, purposely talking like a fool? That guy expects to get punched in the face every time and roll with it to get as much comedy out of every situation as possible.

Now that you mention it, I seem to recall someone talking about that issue before.

No, but the beating is a good example of why you shouldnt harrass people.

Re: Borat beaten in New York
If I had some odd acting stranger come up to me and they made a sexually suggestive remark about my clothing I would at least consider bitch slapping them. If the remarks were aimed at my wife that "consideration" would move to a certainty.
There used to be a very apt and needed principle in law called "fighting words". The idea being that is is perfectly possible by use of words alone to be so offensive or inflammatory as to earn oneself a violent response. It really is a shame we have abandoned that concept.

Be that all as it may, and I can certainly see how one would respond in a less than civil manner to such antics, doesn't this seem a little excessive?

Assuming the report is accurate, shouldn't a verbal response have come first, rather than "taking one look and punching him in the face", let alone "slugging again and again" when the person is yelling for help, rather than "returning fire"?

We haven't abandoned it.....apparently it's the basis for our foreign policy.

Re: Borat beaten in New York
At least two people here have described New Yorkers as being hostile, unfriendly, and potentially violent if not left alone. Question: have you ever been to New York? They're the most outgoing, extroverted and tolerant God-damned people in the world!
Sure, if you injure or insult a New Yorker, you're playing with your life, but going up to a stranger and talking to them? Even talking to them about stuff that's weird or inappropriate? Forgetaboutit; these are people who spend their lives packed into subways with each-other like sardines, and by the time they get to work in the morning, they've seen more faces and encountered more cultures, languages, points of view and social pathologies than most of us experience in year.
When a city has such a diverse population sharing such a small amount of physical space, it can not work unless people are darned friendly and respectful. It does, and they are.

Re: Borat beaten in New York
Maybe the assailant was actually a tourist, convinced that he was bound to be mugged in "the most dangerous city in the world".
On a side note, I read in the paper this morning that the mustache is coming back.

Things are indeed quite bad in Johannesburg these days:

I mean you just don't see problems like that in New York or anywhere else that I can think of.

Oh, just watched that again. I guess most of the footage was from 1990. Sadly, I don't expect things have improved much.
