Finally caved and bought a new machine.

New to the form and need help!
I decided to come out of the Ice age and buy a new machine. Current machine is a Silver door G4 running 9.2 (no laughing!) Quark 4.2, Photoshop 6, Illustartor 9, ATM deluxe etc.javascript:insert_text('blush', '');
blush
Ordered a new: Mac Pro, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR module, Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple wireless Mighty Mouse - U.S. English, One 16x SuperDrive, Accessory kit, Two 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2GB (4 x 512MB), 250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s, Mac OS X - U.S. English, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI)

Using it mostly for page layout, so Quark 6.5, Illustrator ?.?, Photoshop?.?
Wanted to know what else you guys/gurls are using (3rd party apps ie, extensis,  font management etc), and which to avoid. Also want to know experiences you are having  (don't use this it sux, or this is better than that). Any other info would be greatly appreciated, OS 10  is compleltely foreign to me.
Thx

Add InDesign to that list. Many are dumping Quark for it. If you are doing web work, consider Dreamweaver.

Ciao for now!

Since the Adobe apps aren't Intel native yet, they will be running under Rosetta, so you will not see any really significant render times there.  Well, actually, coming from a G4 and skipping a couple generations, you might.

Re: Finally caved and bought a new machine.

Quite honestly, I say you're in somewhat of a pickle in terms of upgrading to newer Adobe applications.

You now have an Intel mac, and you therefor can't run your old OS 9 applications in OS X. Moreover, the Intel native version of Adobe Creative Suite (CS3) is not going to be out for a few months.

You can buy the current PPC version of Creative Suite (CS2) and it will work just fine. However it will be significantly slower then an native Intel version.  If you do buy CS2 consider an upgrade to CS3 later down the line. Or, you could try and scrape by on the G4 for a few months until CS3 is released.

That said if you don't do anything too demanding you might not notice the difference between CS2 and CS3.

What would be a worst case scenario project file for you?

PS, consider Linotype's Font Explorer as a free replacement for Adobe Type Manager:

Although I'm stubborn and I tend to scrape by with Apple's Font Book. It's not the best but it works shrug

Re: Finally caved and bought a new machine.

Thanks for your answers. Yes cannot run old OS9 apps.
What about buying CS2 and upgrade when it comes out? Any idea what type of upcharge if any there will be to do this, or is it just going to be a patch?
Also doesn't CS2 come with InDesign bundled?
New machine is a done deal, so now I need to plan the software. Not too much work in Adobe apps. Some retouching and manipulation in Photoshop on stock art, Illustrator nothing really to speak of. I just need to know that it will work!
Do they even sell ATM Deluxe anymore?

It will not be a patch and will probably cost several hundred dollars, as previous upgrades have. Don't worry too much about the Intel Native thing yet. If you need it, buy it and then consider the upgrade later. Even non-native, it's still far faster than running native on PPC hardware. CS3 could be smurfing amazing.

Of course! Screw Quark.

If they do, don't bother. Suitcase has taken over every office I know of but I still prefer FontReserve. OS X comes with FontBook, but I've not had much luck with it in managing any large quantities of fonts. There's also Linotype FontExporerX which I've heard excellent things about, and the price can't be beat.
