Power Mac red wine disaster
HI everyone, this is my first post adn ahve only just registered...it is a dire situation indeed!!!!
3 hours ago I did the unthinkable......mannaged to drop a half full bottle of red wine (that I was transporting to the bin) down the fornt of my PowerMac G5....it was on at the time and I dived for teh power cord (hindsight: good or abd idea??? discuss).........I ahve thoroughly dried everything inside....logic board, fans, RAM, EVERTHING that I could find with even the slightest trace of moisture...and aired it for some time too....there is NO moisture...check the cables too.
Guess what? It wont boot
This is what it does do:
Power goes on
POwer LED lights (no flashing for POST errors)
Fans spin up normally
Hard drive is accessed fora short period then stops
After a couple of munites the fans ramp up to full and stay there (until I wimp out adn switch it off for fear of melting!)
What it doesnt do:
NO Video whatsoever (note...only a small amount of moisture went on video card, but dried this juts as thoroughly as everything else)
Sigh...I know I am an idiot for mixing technology with alcohol...but I repent!!!
Can anyone shed a little light on this and any liekly problems that could ahve been the result????? I dont trust PC repair centres (rip off merchants), and damn it: Im an engineer: I want to fix this myself...although I am not so proud that I cant beg for help!
Oh, and I fully realise that there will be some p***taking, I am fully prepared for it.
Many Thanks,
Rich:o

Re: Power Mac red wine disaster
I once spilled a beverage on my beloved PB Pismo. It was only a small amount of water on the right side; most of the water hit the table but some hit my computer on the right upper side near the speaker. After that the sound wouldn't work at all.
At first I thought I had fried something permanently, but I let it dry out and it worked later on in the day (3-5 hours later). However, what worked for me, may not for you, since I dealt with a relatively small amount of liquid.
Since your talking about a much larger amount of liquid, I'm not quite sure what's gonna happen (and mine was water not alcohol). I would try to clean the affected areas as much as possible and let dry until completely free of moisture. I'm not sure what kind of cleaning solution is the best for this situation but Isopropyl alcohol is commonly used for cleaning electronic components. And make sure it's completely dry before powering up. I would not run it while wet or with dried wine residue on its internal components as unwanted side-effects may occur.
Good luck and never drink while driving your Mac - OK you can, but may suffer some expensive consequences as a result.

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Have you removed and then reseated everything that can be pulled from its slot? I would recomend that. Actually taking all the chips and cards out and letting it sit a day or 2 wouldnt be a bad idea.
Good luck

Re: Power Mac red wine disaster
3 hours ago, you let it dry for "some time too."
that is not nearly enough time to be sure all moisture has disappeared.
unplug the power cable, then put a running household fan in front of the computer for at least 12 hours. take the side covers off, and don't go anywhere near it with liquid.
moisture can hide between electrical contacts for a long - long time.
unfortunately, wine can have a corrosive effect on metals even after it has "dried". odds are good that electrical contacts have not been splashed, though, since the power button and front board would seem to be the most likely damaged elements. the machine powers on, so that's a good sign.
the problem doesn't necessarily indicate that a component has "shorted". it sounds more like a drive directory, OS, or PRAM / NVRAM problem.
i've seen something similar occur without the introduction of fluids. make as sure as you possibly can that the machine is 100% dry before plugging it back in.
you may be in luck. (crosses fingers)
when you do start it again, reset the NVRAM as the first thing you do.
if it doesn't boot, try single user mode and run fsck -yf.
if it still doesn't run, try booting from a CD.

Re: Power Mac red wine disaster
My wife and I went to visit some friends a few years ago during a break. I'm a teacher so I'd brought my PowerBook 145B with me so I could work on report cards. When we got there our friends' cat was acting really sketchy-zooming around and avoiding us.
We were leaving the house to do some sightseeing so I told my friend I'd leave my computer on our bed in case he wanted to check it out. When we returned a day later I walked into the room we were staying in and noticed something about my Mac looked strange. As I drew closer I discovered that their cat had defecated on top of my PowerBook! Not only that, it had also urinated on it and the deflated inflatable mattress it was sitting on had provided a perfect waterproof dish for my computer to sit in cat pee for 24 hrs. When I slipped the battery out, cat urine literally poured out of my computer's case. The cat also saved up some urine and then crossed the room to piss on my report cards. I was pretty depressed.
Anyway, we called Apple and they told us to dry it out for a couple of days and then try to boot it up. Thay said that that was what they usually recommended for water spills but they weren't sure about whether it would be effective for urine. So we used a hair dryer and waited a couple of days for it to dry out. Then the moment of truth came. The computer booted right up and was fine. The only problem was that once the machine warmed up it really started to stink. When I got home I tore the whole thing apart and cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and it worked fine for a couple of years. Finally, the acid it the urine toasted the logic board and I had to replace it. I still use the computer every day for grading and making up assignments.

A good ending to the story might have been – you went back to their house exacting revenge by urinating and defecating in the cat's food dish, sleeping area, and on top of the television. Seems only fair.

Just don't urinate on the cat - angers 'em up sumpin' terrible.
Patience is a virtue of the weak for it makes them stand still long enough for the strong to crush them with ease.

wow - had that happened to me I likely would have brought new meaning to the phrase: "there's more than one way to skin a cat"
