Trouble Waking

Yes, that was WAKING! wink

I'm hopeless at the best of times, but right about now, when its barely light in the mornings, I just can't wake up. It's becoming a major PITA and could ultimately cost me my job if I can't get it sorted.

I've always been a REALLY heavy sleeper. Like when I was an undergrad in halls and someone set the fire alarm off in the middle of the night, I slept right through it. Wouldn't be so bad, but there was a honkin' great claxon in every room -- it was biblically loud, but didn't even rouse me.

Anyway, my alarm goes off at 6.50 every weekday morning. I hear it, stick an arm out from under the covers, poke whatever button on the thing I can find that will shut it up -- pot luck if its "off" or "snooze" -- and go back to sleep. This is like an unconscious reflex now. If I did manage to hit "snooze" then I will just repeat the process in a state of oblivion every 10 minutes, until I'm ready to wake. Today I awoke at 7.55, by which time I needed to have been washed and dressed, in order to make it to work on time. "Oooh smurf!"

I don't go to bed desperately late - usually around 11.30 and I always get a good night's sleep, so why the hell can't I wake at a time that suits me?? I've tried placing my alarm clock on the other side of the room, so that I have to physically leave the bed to turn it off, but I'll do that in a state unconsciousness and then just go back to bed! Grrr.

Does anyone else have this problem or any ideas what I might try?

Re: Trouble Waking

From Kuro5hin's Front Page:
How to wake up by 6:30 every morning - for the serious procrastinator and a response:
1419's How To Wake Up Angry At 5 am Every Morning.

Both actually have useful things to say (but presuppose that you want to actually get out of bed).

When I have to get up and go to lessons then I tend to find that ATR gets me awake but not necessarily in a very good or helpful mood.

Put your alarm way out of arms reach.

Re: Trouble Waking

I have the same problem and have since I was required to start using an alarm clock.  I've tried multiple alarm clocks all over the room, but truthfully, I usually rely on Aaron and Meef to get me out of bed.

However, the best thing I've found, short of having another person or a cat help wake me up, is the Peaceful Progression Wake Up Clock.  I would recommend it, or something like it.

More gentle than the jarring noise of traditional alarms, this clock uses a gradual increase in ambient light, stimulating aromas, and peaceful sounds from nature to awaken sleepers.

The clock isn't perfect (the display is too bright, it doesn't have a radio, and the sound samples aren't the greatest) but it works better than other automated systems I've tried.

I have the same problem.

Maybe a 100 watt lamp on a timer would help.

Re: Trouble Waking

I almost envy your deep sleep. I'm such a light sleeper, the neighbors could drop a pin on their carpet and it would wake me up. My problem is getting enough sleep!

If you like coffee you could set it to start brewing at 6:40am or so. Maybe the smell would help rouse you. That wakes me right up.

Then again, I'm a light sleeper...

Re: Trouble Waking

Really, though, 11:30 is a bit late - maybe you should try to make it 10:30.

Re: Trouble Waking

From the comments on Kuro5hin's Front Page:

Put your cat in the oven. Put oven on full, and oven timer and you alarm clock on for the same time. That way, you feel morally compeled to get up and let the cat out of the oven before it gets uncomfortable, let alone injured or dies.
It takes some getting used to, but it works.

Ha ha ha!  lol

Re: Trouble Waking

I've heard of some watch that will adjust the alarm to your REM cycle and wake you up at a time when you're not in deep sleep, so you're much more likely to wake up, and be happy about it.

I've developed the same "not being able to get up" problem, but that's because I can't fall asleep (hence the other thread).

Good luck!

Clocky.

Sonic "BOMB" Alarm Clock.

Puzzle Alarm Clock.

Sonic Grenade.

Kuku Alarm Clock.

And for Shadowless: Axbo Alarm Clock. A bit pricey at 200 Euros (~US$250), but I'm going to look into this.

Yeah I totally misread that at first.

Nothing more to add other than I have trouble falling asleep and waking up.
