Top this for a holiday killer.
I freakin accidentally shot myself.
What happened was, we went to the range up in Richland, GA and my normal sixgun has a broken spring so I took my grandfather's old Colt. It has no safetys whatsoever.
I had just reloaded the old revolver and was putting it back in the holster when my beltloop caught the hammer and pulled it back enough to not go to half cock, but enough to snap down on a live round, thus setting it off.
The bullet entered behind my knee and exited just above my ankle. However it missed my femural artery, but traveled down between the Tibia and Fibula, doing alot of damage, but not hitting the bones and exiting just above my ankle. I never felt a thing.
Needless to say I almost bled to death while my brother in law was getting me to a hospital.
I've had two surgeries and am in PT now. It hurts like hell, but I will make a full recovery.

That's a shame because I thought that Budapest for the last two months might be an ideal place to find out (what with the riots and rubber bullets).

I don't see how shooting yourself in the leg is manly.

OW !
. . . glad you're all right. I wonder why you didn't feel it when it happened, nerve damage, shock, combination of those ? ?
I had a knee operated on a couple of years ago and it's wierd, it hasn't been the same since. I have full range of motion but it always feels like there's parts missing. . . I hope you get good PT.

Re: Top this for a holiday killer.
Missed a main arteryand bones, there's an entry/exit wound; if you was in a movie, it'd just be a flesh wound, and you'd have driven yourself to the hospital - but not before helping out an old lady in distress, and foiling a bank robbery.
In the real world, I'm glad you're okay, and hope you have a speedy and successful recovery.

Yes neglent, I will own up to it 100%.
I should have had only 5 in the chamber of the antique gun to avoid exactly what happened.
I had become complacent with my modern Baretta Stampede sixgun with the modern lockout bar.

Re: Top this for a holiday killer.
I prefer the "cocked n locked" of a 45acp myself.
my personal history feels that " guns" of the antique style should have a dummy round glued in one chamber.
btw...
a 9mm is like a cigarette, proven it can kill.... just not the same day
ANY 45 cal is my preferred calibre.
the 40 Short n Wimpy would be second.
wound looks like they did a good job fixing you up.
coulda been much worse.
I did say an ouch for ya tho.
it's a bummer.
good you kept your humor and glad ya look n sound like you will be OK.

Re: Top this for a holiday killer.
this doesn't nearly compare to what happened to you (ouch btw, and glad you're alright considering), but i shot myself before too. sort of.
i was shooting at a bottle that i had sat on a steel post. it was a duh-moment. i missed, and the bullet ricocheted back and hit me in the upper thigh. i was very lucky. it didn't penetrate, but sure left me with a great welt and bruise. it felt like someone smacked me with a baseball bat.

<shudder> How about linking those pics? thanks
That said, I hope you've no lasting effects, like a limp.
What caliber was that? . . Oh, you mentioned an antique revolver, possibly a 45. I'm glad it was (relatively) low power. A newer weapon would have done considerably more damage.
I've a 357 magnum revolver with the 'transfer bar' that allows carrying a round under the hammer. This thread reinforces my prior choice not to ever own a revolver without that safety feature.
