Never underestimate the number of idiots around you...

In my IT-101 class the average GPA after the final was a 2.9!  We had over 1/5 of our total grade available as extra credit in the form of 10-minute small assignments and the class was so easy!  How the heck do you get a 2.9 in an introductory class?  I got out of that class with something like 30+ extra points out of 450 for a 4.0 and my instructor was thrilled that someone actually got one...WTF people c'mon!

Well if people at your school are anything like mine... they enjoy making dry ice bombs while I'm trying to study for biochem instead of studying for their own exams. Who needs school when mommy and daddy will let you live at home after you fail out?!

Re: Never underestimate the number of idiots around you...

While it varies by program and school, generally speaking, 51% of college students in the US graduate from baccalaureate institutions within five years of initial enrollment.  More importantly (at least where this thread is concerned) 49% don't.

Taking an intro level college course?  Look around you.  Statistically speaking, half of your class won't be there come graduation time.  So yeah.

The Bachelor's Degree is now the new High school Diploma.

In your average engineering program only 25% of the class will make it with you to graduation.  Out of around 50 or so that started ME when I did there were 13 that graduated.  Though no one has cared about my GPA in the sixth months I've had a job.  My intern (look at me!  I have an intern!) confessed that keeping a 2.25 is a real struggle.

Besides all the above a lot of prerequisite type classes dont warrant anything but a modest effort. They are just a detour on the way to what you really want to study.

Ironic. Like rain. On your wedding day.

There's still too many high school dropouts for the Bachelor's Degree to be "the new High School Diploma".

Whereas in the old days when not as many people went to college, having just a bachelor's degree was enough to get a good job. Now you need an advanced degree to make any money...

A high school diploma used to be the stepping stone to the last bit of your education, now the BA/BS degree is.

Too many people have college degrees and university is dumbed down so much so that everyone can get one without too much work. Just like high school. And where a high school degree doesn't open many doors for you (careerwise), neither does a bacherlor's anymore.

Depends on if you get you degree from Bobs House of Diplomas or a real school. Most colleges make the average person work for their degree.

D is for Diploma.

I'm pretty sure that I go to a "real school" and I still think they are handing them out too easily.

Re: Never underestimate the number of idiots around you...

It was pretty hard at the university I went to – a lot harder than at my high school. If you wanted to get good grades you really had to work for them, turn in your assignments on time, and follow the rules. A lot of people who didn't have it together dropped courses. In my classes there were many withdrawls halfway through the semesters from students who couldn't handle it. The school was very serious about how to properly cite your papers. Academic disciplinary actions were frequently taken against those who didn't cite sources for their papers or who outright engaged in plagarism. And a lot of students would get little or no credit for assignments turned in late. Some of the class projects were especially hard in the upper level classes.

Students were not handed good grades just for showing up and paying tuition. You couldn't behave stupidly and expect to get a good grade. You had to have your act together for the real world. I know some people who didn't work hard (or follow rules) and then had to withdraw, get marginal grades, or get warnings about expulsion. I don't know about community colleges because I never attended any of them. Maybe some colleges are easier but my 4 year school surely wasn't.

Re: Never underestimate the number of idiots around you...

We lost our Unix and C family course and ended up as a C++ course where we just memorised bits of the STL. This is about to progress into a .net course.

I'm trying to convince some fellow students to take two classes as part of their degree. Programming Languages and Compilers. Compilers is listed as a subject but it is only there for one reason, "Hope". It is my intention to at least attempt the Programming Languages which covers a number of languages and their makeup which is a prerequisite for Compilers.

When I see engineers using sticky tape and plastic wire ties to hold a gearbox together for their engineering project, it is kinda a problem. One of my hobbies is Model Engineering and my current project is a 60cm (25") long steam engine. (Which is running on air) So when they tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about, it's rather annoying. It gets worse when I said that I'm used to working in thousandths of an inch (lathe is still in imperial) and their retort is, "It's impossible to build something that accurately!".

Re: Never underestimate the number of idiots around you...

i went to a junior college for a year and quit. the one i went to was worthless. the "computer programming" courses they offered were centered around the RPG language, and there was no way in hell i was gonna do that for the rest of my life.

now i'm in a four year university, and it's definitely a lot  harder than high school and junior college, but at least i can learn things that are relevant to what i want to do with my life.

Well this is true, at times I am surprised to see that there are indeed so many idiots and initially we fail to recognize them. It happened with me with my close friends and perhaps everyone, looks like the brains go for a stroll for some persons or they are without them since inception.
