Stupid TSA policy: more on the War on Liquids
First listen to this NPR report. Javascript and RealPlayer required to listen.
Official policy of the Transportation Stopping Agency is that the SIZE of the container is crucial?
I thought that this was a tale about a particularly incompetent TSA official (e.g., having to throw away a rolled-up toothpaste tube because it was labelled "5.8 oz." even though it obviously had less than an ounce of gel), but apparently this idiocy is official TSA policy.
I can't wait for people to relabel their containers so that it obviously holds more than 3 ounces, but the label says "2.78 ounces" so this would be OK by the TSA rules.
On top of everything: the charges on the UK terror plot have been dropped, so why are we continuing the War on Liquids?

War on liquids? Reminds me about wanting to ban dihydrogen monoxide...
With my best friend at my side,
I face the new day in full stride.
I don't know what the future holds,
But I'll be waiting, proud and bold.

Re: Stupid TSA policy: more on the War on Liquids
Recently at LAX, a 0.5 oz. bottle of Purell Hand Sanitizer was taken away from me at the first security check. ("That's a GEL!" the agent explained). At the final check, I was stopped and questioned because "the name on my ticket did not match the name on my driver's license", i.e. one said: Kathleen, and the other: Kathy.
Sheesh.

Re: Stupid TSA policy: more on the War on Liquids
This summer my friend had his empty bottle of Fanta confiscated at passport control because of the no liquids rule. He tried to point out that it merely contained air, but the hardcore security control woman (with crew cut, yikes!) was not interested. They were even (allegedly) fussing over the number of contact lenses one could take in hand luggage. Something like four pairs max, which means people using daily disposables were supposed to check them. Lunacy.

Obviously a terrorist plot. You should have been strip-searched!

As the resident airport security guy, I'll contest to being somewhat baffled by TSA policy.
On one hand, I there is usually some sort of ridiculous method for this madness, on the other hand, there is a lot of money being blown to make everyone "feel" safe.

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:
Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
Contributes to soil erosion.
Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.
Get the facts.

Re: Stupid TSA policy: more on the War on Liquids
All in all, most of this liquid / gel crap should go away in a few years once EDS machines replace the jankie xray machines at airports.
That said, liquids have been a known security problem for a long long time. Moreover, it's not like liquids were / are the only known major security vulnerability.

This proves that not only is any liquid dangerous, but also the very presence of a living being on a plane is a bomb threat. It's only in our best interest.

Re: Stupid TSA policy: more on the War on Liquids
Am I the only one who thinks restricting what people can carry on is a good idea? It makes one hell of a lot more sense than idiocy like No Fly Lists and such.
This is my take on this little smurf storm. People are happy to see laws restricting civil liberties, suspension of Habeas corpus and such but cry like the spoiled, immature babies they are at the slightest hint of an inconvenience.

Re: Stupid TSA policy: more on the War on Liquids
IMHO the entire airport security thing is just completely overdone. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so strict, but they are INCREDIBLY strict w/o compromise. It doesn't matter if someone slips a lighter on board. It doesn't matter if someone has a bottle of water with them. It doesn't matter if some old lady has a pair of tweezers. It just doesn't matter.
I hate the fact that they think anyone and everyone wants to blow up an airplane. How about a completely new strategy. Making sure we have no enemies who want to blow planes up? How about that?
GGggaaawwwwdddd. I wish there were at least a little bit a common sense at these government organizations.

If they let old ladies have them, but not others, its "profiling"

They shouldn't ban tweezers in the first place. And, it's not a question of "profiling" or not, I think it's just them being wwwaaayyy too strict and w/o compromise.

What if myself and a friend bring 2.5 oz liquid each and then mix it on the plane? Or what if I were to produce more than 3 oz of liquid on the plane?
