Holiday Donations
During the year, i regularly donate to The Humane Society, but during the holidays i try to give a little more. At work, i bring food to put into the giant barrels that go to feed the hungry. This year, i'm also going to donate to The Wish Book, which is sponsored by my local newspaper. They pick 25 individuals/families/services that are most in need and publicize the need. In turn, people donate to any one of those in need, or you can donate to the general fund. I always have a hard time trying to decide who to give to. A lot of the stories are incredibly sad.
So, do you donate at the holidays to anyone? People/places you don't normally give to?

Every year to the Salvation Army, and this year to our nearest Humane Society.

Salvation Army is horribly homophobic and doesn't deserve a cent of my income.

Re: Holiday Donations
I donate to a couple of lofty causes as standard, they don't get anything extra because it's the holiday season. Then there's the annual begging from my evening paper, I usually give some money to that. Nice to have your charities picked for you, saves me the trouble of thinking them up. I donate to my weekly leftist-intellectualist paper, too, because they're poor and constantly in fear of going belly-up after 130 years, so I give them some money on top of the subscription fee every december. I get a gift certificate for three months' worth of issues to give to someone I deem in need of some brain fodder, so there's something in it for me, too. Lastly, there's a local church that was being restored, I donated quite heavily to that, but I just got an invite to come see the great job they've done, so I guess those funds will go to the new Mosque they're building nearby from next year on.

That's an awfully unfair generalization.
When I had my appendix removed (on Christmas eve a few years ago) I was 18, so they put me in pediatrics (so I didn't have to sit next to any grumpy old men). The Salvation Army paid me a visit, and gave me all sorts of free 8-12 year old toys, and then I heard them down the hall playing their instruments, and I got a personal concert. I was the only one on peds that day.
Granted I was 18, and I wasn't terribly excited by the 8-12 year old toys, it was still a nice gesture from a bunch of friendly elderly folks. I always give to the Salvation Army.

I give what I can when I can, regardless of season. CFC is very convenient.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

I thought C Ives post was very funny and came back to this thread just to read it again.

I've been told there was no post. If you know what's good for you then you didn't see any post either.

Re: Holiday Donations
Oh, and so as not to ruin the thread: I don't generally do any donating to anyone. I'm selfish that way. My wife generally puts change into the Salvation Army coffers while coming out of stores.

It would have been pretty funny about two months from now.

But then it wouldn't have fit in the holiday season.

Re: Holiday Donations
So the other night I was leaving the store and I passed some girl ringing the salvation army bell. I thought of this thread decided, why not. Now, my hands were full, so I told her to reach into my front pocket because there was something in there for her. She looked a bit skeptical, but reached in. "I don't feel anything," she said. "Reach in deeper," I told her.
Anyway, long story short, I'm out on a $1,000 bond and I'm not allowed near Shop-ko or the Salvation Army people anymore. Also, the charges are completely bogus because I had no idea she was a minor. Why is the Salvation Army hiring 16 year olds?
So thanks for nothing. I'm going back no not donating anything to anyone.

they gave me 700 bucks cash post Rita.

Re: Holiday Donations
We are nice people all year. Quite frankly the largest "charity" we donate to at Christmas is my parents. They get a hundred bucks.

Re: Holiday Donations
The military analogy is one thing that really creeps me out about the Salvation Army. They really get into it with ranks. My dad was involved with them for a while and I remember hearing him talk about Captain or Sergeant so-and-so.
