external hard drive for home network backup

I've got 3 macs on a wireless home network.

A G5, an iMac and  15' PowerBook

What external hard drive in the 300GB to 500GB range is the best choice for storage and backup.

Most of the time the 3 machines are used independently of each other, just basically sharing an internet connection (thru Motorola SGB 1000 Wireless gateway)confused

Re: external hard drive for home network backup

why not add an internal big drive to the g5? it'd be cheaper and faster. anything wireless is going to still be DEAD slow for backing up anything in the 300 to 500 GB range... but if you must go external, if it were me, I would buy a bare 500 GB seagate or maxtor or western digital (they are all comparable and everyone has had good or bad experiences with any of them), and then put it inside a 3.5 inch external enclosure kit from Other World Computing: take your pick - eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/External-Enclosures/

[edit] am i not suppost to refer people to sites like that? someone just tell me, im not in the mood to search through picky forum rules.

Re: external hard drive for home network backup

Don't ever use an internal drive for a backup for, If the computers power supply was to go and cook the drives, your computer was damaged or stolen, or Lighting strikes your house ( a problem where I live ). All your data would be gone (or would be really costly to get back).

I have 2 external drives for back up one is attached to the network for incremental backups every other day and the other is a firewire drive I use every so often to back up all the machines and then take it to my office. Even if my house were to get struck by lightning and every thing plugged in fried, I would still have my data.

Also if you search online stores you will find it's often more money to buy a drive and then a good external enclosures. Then just to buy a good brand name one assembled

I use Lacie Drives, the Lacie 500 GB Ethernet / USB drive is only 199.99 and then the second is a Lacie big disk 640 GB.

If you do use just one external drive, unplug it from the wall and computer and stick it in a safe place when not in use.
