Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here
Yes, I got it. And my feelings are mixed. First of all, the new design seems... cluttered. Imagine one of the more psychedelic HP ads splayed across the page. As for the content...
1. 2 pages on FileMaker: "Work Smarter, Not Harder!" It doesn't tell you how to do anything, just vague ideas on how it can be useful. Also, "No matter what your field, FileMaker Pro offers the best way to manage it all." Does this seem a bit odd for a non-review?
2. The Best Mac Icons Ever 3 of icons. Interesting concept, but ultimately too little actual content. And listing icon design patterns: "5. A sure way to associate an icon with its app is to put the app's name in the icon." doesn't count.
Keep in mind, I just started paging through it - the above is just what immediately popped out at me. I'm not condemning it, I'm just surprised by some of it.
P.S. I miss Max.

Though they are I still think it's strange. Especially since, as Justine said, it's supposed to be revealed at MacWorld. It makes me wonder if this isn't just a spoiler of some kind. I really hope it's as good as Rik and the others are saying since I've got a twoyear subscription of it.
Now, where in the name of... did I put that thing that I forgot what it was and why I was looking for it?

Re: Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here
I got mine yesterday. My subsctiption tends to come a week before magazines hit the newsstands. The local newsstand tells me that the first wave of new magazine come in the second week of the month. He also said he's not surprised that some subscriptions come before newsstand.
Anyway, I usually don't post here, but since this MacAddict=> MacLife thing is "big," I thought I'd offer my two cents.
1. I love the new design. The old design had no cohesion; I often felt like I was reading several different magazines. If you think the new layout is cluttered, then what did you think of the old layout? MacAddict was the definition of cluttered layout. The MacLife design is 100 times better.
2. The copy to me doesn't seem to read much differently.
3. The FileMaker story that cocoarevo critized is an ad. It clearly says "Advertising Supplement" across the top.
4. The last page is a letdown. I was hoping to end with more of a bang.
And to be honest, I don't miss Max. I know I'll piss off many here, since there seems to be a large Max following. But Max, to me, isn't very Mac like. I got over cartoon characters in the 7th grade.

Then you've not been around since '96.

Ok, this is starting to irritate me. I emailed customer service to ask what was going on since i still haven't received my Jan 07 issue of MacAddict and some of you are already receiving MacLife. The auto response came back from MacLife.

The site preview (in the mag) looks very nice! As nice as the mag. Hopefully the forums will be branded to match the main site.

And your point is...that you're unwilling to change because you're stuck in time?
Apple has undergone more changes than MacAddict; beige boxes, to candy colors and curves to more minimal sophistication, just as an example. Another example: I liked the original, rainbow colored Apple logo, but I didn't cry when Apple decided to ditch it. Times, tastes, and symbols change. The Mac public has rolled with Apple's changes. I think I can do the same for MacLife. As long as it keeps providing my with stuff I can use, then I'll read it.

Here's the thing, though; it won't so long as Rik is at the helm.
Just because Apple dropped the six-colours we bleed from day-to-day operations doesn't mean they dropped the silhouette entirely. There's still branding there. The same with this operation that's evolved from plethora of content and personality that came from imagine publishing.
What you're saying is the equivalent to Apple dropping the silhouette Apple entirely. Wake the smurf up.

Hi! Yes, subscription copies are out. Yes, newsstand copies should hit on 1/9 (Justine, it's the February issue, but it was always scheduled to hit newsstands on 1/9.) Sub copies are usually a bit ahead...one of the benefits of subscribing. I just got my copy today, so some of you are even ahead of me!
Anyway, hope you enjoy it. More to come at the Expo and beyond...

Well, then, you should be happy that I am, indeed, no longer "at the helm" -- I'm preparing the new MacLife.com, and am only a columnist and occasional contributor to Mac|Life.
Which, I can only assume, you'll rename "MacSmurf.com." Or some such...

Rik,
