Re: Do you like your boss?

I've seen my boss twice now.  Once when I was hired and once at the christmas party.  He seems like a nice enough guy though.

Re: Do you like your boss?

My contract was extended, for a couple of months, but my boss never actually told me the date to which it was extended. I was taking off the last week of December, and the friday before I was to go on this vacation, I got an email from her, she went on vacation that Wednesday.

It read almost like a Merry Christmas email. Then I re-read it, and decided it didn't. So I emailed, her back and asked, please clarify, is today my last day?

To which she responded, Yes, didn't anyone tell you?

Needless to say, my opinion of her as a boss, is extremely low.

New Boss is an ass a couple times a month.   Old Boss was pretty good.   All but one of the workers explicitly said the old boss was better.

Re: Do you like your boss?

My boss is pretty nice. We frequently have potlocks in the lab, and a few times we've actually gone out for payed staff lunch. Of course, part of that is probably because our group is entirely staffed by interns... tongue She's also pretty flexible: my position has expanded to do quite a bit more of what I want to do, and has in turn helped make my job a lot easier and pass a lot of the more menial tasks to other people. (such as making a nice interface for the command-line map making utility we use so other people can make their own damn maps wink)

Re: Do you like your boss?

I hate my boss passionately.

He refuses to give me work to do of my own, so every day I have to come into work and find him before I can do anything.  This is compounded by the fact that he frequently is hard to find at work (our area spans 3 floors and one wing of the building, plus a few places in a building about 1.5 miles away).  When he does assign me tasks during the day he usually gives me a hazy description of what he wants that trails off at the end "You should be a new heater using this par..."

He groused when I asked for a week off at Christmas so I could travel 2000 mi home and see my family for the first time in a year, and since I've been back, he hasn't shown up to work.  It really blows waking up at 8:30 am and wondering if it's worth getting out of bed because your boss might not be at work.

Thank you, nice boss, for making me quit a PhD program.  >.<

Re: Do you like your boss?

My boss is a nice guy to us, but he really doesn't quite "get" what I'm supposed to be doing. I get really frustrated when he completely ignores my expertise and training because he thinks I'm too junior to know anything.

He also doesn't understand the role of a division officer to the enlisted personnel.

Re: Do you like your boss?

I got back to my job after Xmas, illness, etc, and there was a big box See's Candy on my desk, with a note attached: "Just in case you don't feel you are appreciated enough". Plus a new stapler to replace the old black Swingline dubbed 'Fang' (not a term of endearment).

I might make it through tax season.

Re: Do you like your boss?

I am a partner now in a restaurant, but before that my two bosses (2 brothers from Dublin) where excellent. Very level-headed and supportive. Also, they are piss heads like me, so we see eye to eye almost all of the time.

That said, I am always curious as to how my employees view me. They've (for the most part) given good reviews that I've gotten wind of, so that makes me happy. I try to lead by example busting my ass when it needs to get busted. For the most part, the good workers acknowledge and appreciate that.

We have a fair amount of turnover, as is normal in this biz. I tend to treat people how they react on the job. If they are self sufficient, fast, organized, and overall good at their job, I leave them be to do their thing. But when they are lazy, self centered, inefficient, I tend to ride their asses until their either quit or get better.

Re: Do you like your boss?

Yeah, it can be tricky knowing how your employees feel about you. They generally won't let down their guard when they are around you, no matter how nice you try to be.

It's probably better not to worry about it and simply try to be fair according to your standards.

Re: Do you like your boss?

I can't actually figure out who my real boss is.  I think I have 6 of them that I report in various different ways.

Most of the time I ignore them.

As of last night, i despise my bosses boss. I really wish nothing but bad things on him. He treats our raises as if he's paying them out of his pocket.

"smurf you!  You're hung-over again, aren't you?  Get your ass in here!"

I'll get him one day!

Me too.

Re: Do you like your boss?

I like my supervisor, the office manager.
She came to me the othe day and said they were having trouble with the off-site computers, and the IT guy said the problem was that somebody was downloading music from something called sirius.
OOPPS!
She didn't write me up or nothing, she just said, "I didn't know it would do that!"
and I said, "Me neither!"
She's OK like that.
My Boss, the senior partner, has been living in the United States for about Thirity years, and he still acts like he's a forigener, like he doesn't "get it".
He's a nice guy, but it takes him, like, two years to decide to let one our vendors give us a new free computer. I don't know how he decides which sock to put on first.
