I want to see the terminal widget running. If this thing has a terminal app, every decent network admin will have one.
Just wait until Adium gets ported...

Ooooooh, I most likely will buy one of these.
.
.
.
but probably not until January of next year. I normally wait a few months after launch of anything to buy one. I want all the bugs worked out first. Unfortunately 'a few months' means the Christmas buying season. Availability will no doubt be nearly nonexistent during that time. Hence I'll probably wait until next January. Dang, a year wait.

Re: iPhone
I've been using a Sony Clié for line for a while now. My latest is the NX70V which I've had since 2002. Now that its long in the tooth I've been holding out for the perfect PDA phone. I have the Motorola Q on Verizon, and I am not happy with Wndows Mobile. Its slow and not intuitive. I only got it becuase I thought if I'm gonna try a PDA Phone I might as well get my feet wet. I can't even get the ActiveSync to work properly with My Wintel box.
Flat out, this is iPhone is the PDA/Phone I have been waiting for and the bonus is its a highly interactive iPod also.
Didn't Linksys have a product already named iPhone?

Anyway I'm going with Apple.

Re: iPhone
I think the song navigation could've been done a bit better. I think it should be sorta like a virtual thumbstick. In other words, you press your thumb on the screen, slide it in a particular direction, and the list (or map, etc) begins to scroll in that direction. The speed of the scrolling is proportional to the distance you slide your thumb from the point of origin.
Apple takes more of a direct manipulation approach, where you "grab" the list and "throw" it in a particular direction. The problem is it requires multiple throws to scroll through a long list.
EDIT: This is still the most amazing freak'n gadget I've ever seen.

Re: iPhone
Not really, the thumbstick model is counterintuitive. Apple most likely has accelerated scrolling included which makes more sense and has worked very well in the past.
Apple has set the bar for UI on this one. It's looking like most of what I was expecting from a full screen touch interface. The gestures don't seem to be there though, might have to do more looking.

Re: iPhone
I really like the iPhone. It's too bad that it's on Cingular only. I'm locked into a Verizon contract (eww) until some time around February. At least that will give me time to let others get the kinks worked out ;-)
It's awesome that it runs OS X, and I like the fact that it can do just about everything. I wonder how much an unlimited data plan for it will cost.

Don't get me wrong. I love the UI too. There's no doubt it's the most revolutionary UI ever. I just think it would be kinda cumbersome to scroll through a long list with Apple's metaphor, but with 4 & 8 GB capacities, it's not a big deal. Apple's metaphor is well-suited to most of the things the iPhone does, so it makes sense to keep it consistent. I'm just saying it doesn't replace the scroll wheel for music navigation, which is something Apple is going to have to consider for the 6G iPod.
EDIT: It doesn't appear to have accelerated scrolling judging from the demo.

Re: iPhone
No accelerated scrolling. Hmm, that may pose a problem. I guess they can add it in with an update later. With a touch screen and accelerated scrolling, the scroll-wheel kinda becomes irrelevant. However on really long lists, I can see it being far more practical. What little I've seen of the workflow and the UI so far, it looks like they got it very right. I'll certainly trust Apple's judgement until proven otherwise, but it looks good at first glance.

Re: iPhone
Yes my Cingular contract expires in 2 weeks! I was going to dump them and switch to some one else as I can't stand the company but looks like I might be sticking around for a while.
since this thing runs OS X and has wifi I hope I can install skype on it and use it to make voip calls when around a hot spot.
sucks that I have to spend $600 to get it, and my wife is going to want one so I have to buy 2.

Re: iPhone
Let me preface my comments by saying that I'm not in the potential market for this product. I'm happy with a phone that simply makes and receives calls. My partner has a Blackberry and loves it - but his work bought it for him and pays for the service. He probably wouldn't have bought one on his own. Which I think is part of the market for these types of devices. It's for people to be able to work from anywhere, etc. The consumer market is going to be somewhat more limited - how many of us really need this?
Which brings us to one glaring problem. Apple mentions POP and IMAP email services, but leaves out the big boy - Exchange. I wonder if there will be any interoperability with Exchange at all. If not, that will torpedo the iPhone as a choice for many corporate environments. I wouldn't sell off my Palm or RIM stock quite yet...
Overall, even though I wouldn't purchase one for personal use, I think that it's a great product. Still, I despise Cingular more than I like Apple, so that alone would be enough to keep me away.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Re: iPhone
The iPhone while interesting looking strikes me as exactly what I don't want, another all-in-1 device that is bulky, likey hard on battery life and when it breaks I'm out multiple devices instead of just one.
Its also not going to be able to replace a blackberry uneless it can talk with an enterprise exchange server for black berry (which I did not see mentioned or written anywhere)
Neat concept from an input / OS standpoint but I don't see anything earth shattering here.

Re: iPhone
-robco
I dont think its targeted at the corprate users. This is a smart phone for consumers.
Exchange can be set up for pop access very easily. You would loose the wireless sync that you get with exchange but you could still get your exchange email.
My wife who hated the Blackberry I got her and went back to her old nokia phone, cant wait to get her hands on the iphone and neither can I. So there is your market, I will still have my companies Blackberry, my personal phone and an ipod. Might as well make it the iphone so I can watch TV listen to music and not have to carry my ipod.
