Re: iPhone

Well, with only 4 or 8GB of storage capacity, the amount of video you can watch will be limited.  Still, I personally wouldn't want to carry two "all-in-one" devices.  It seems counterintuitive somehow.  Hopefully a third-party will develop a solution for Exchange access - perhaps we may even see a mobile version of Entourage for OS X.

My point is that the lion's share of the market is for corporate use.  Life includes work and play.  You may be willing to carry an iPhone (that you personally pay for) and a Blackberry, but I'm guessing that most folks won't.  They'll probably stick with whatever their IT department supports - and that means dealing with the elephant in the room.

I do hope we'll see an iPod version (sans phone capabilities) in the near future.

BTW, I think the new iPhone looks hideous. I prefer the version with the rotary dial instead. wink

That was my first thought, then I reminded myself that it is more than just a cell phone.  The capabilities are worth it - and it runs OS X.

I think I must be one of the lucky few, because my husband's company is looking to renew their cell phone contract which expires in July .... needless to say I'll be encouraging them to look VERY closely at Cingular.  big_smile

Apple is very smart.  More and more people are "switching", but there are those who are still dead-set on M$.  I think people will buy and use the iPhone, like they did the iPod, and then realizing it runs OS X, they won't be so intimidated.  Apple will be converting a lot of people.

If I were Bill or a top exec at M$, I'd be sweatin' it.

I dont think its targeted at the corprate users. This is a smart phone for consumers.

Most home consumers don't want or need an expensive smart phone.

It would be stupid not to try to tap the corporate market. They already have rudimentary Exchange support in Mail.app. I'm sure they could implement the rest pretty easily.

Re: iPhone

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I would LOVE to see this UI in a regular iPod package.

I don't care too much about cell phone operability, but the PDA-like capabilities, plus wi-fi plus iPod is exactly what I need.

So you want them to make the exact same product minus one feature just for you.

Apple takes more of a direct manipulation approach, where you "grab" the list and "throw" it in a particular direction.  The problem is it requires multiple throws to scroll through a long list.

EDIT:  This is still the most amazing freak'n gadget I've ever seen.

I'm guessing you can slide your finger along the side like a typical scrolling list.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but a better analogy would be FireFox's autoscroll feature (hit the middle mouse button in FireFox).  Obviously, the added complexity of performing this with a moues means it won't feel nearly as natural as simply sliding your thumb on the iPhone, so you'll have to use your imagination.

Yeah but can you trust LG for a clean *good* UI.  Of course Apple has been kind of lacking on that also.

Re: iPhone

Yeah, your not kidding. OS X will be fixed this time, for sure and for certain. (The lack of a Leopard preview basically confirms this)

This is gona win cause of the OS X tech behind it. Users, gadget geeks and admins will all want it. The UI appears to be gold and they certainly haven't skimped on any of it.

EDIT: Seen on TV again. Much longer showing how it works, a lot of in Keynote footage and the footage from the website. The flicking to scroll is obvious. It looks ok, but won't know till ya try it. Seems like a variant on accelerated scrolling so yeah.

The news presenter quipped at the end that you'd probably need a degree to operate it. From what I've seen, it seems more intuitive than most mobile phone interfaces and next gen compared to the 'smart' phones.

5 years ago you could have said the same thing about the iPod:  most consumers don't want or need at $499 music player.  And this thing is an iPod, a cell phone, a PDA, an internet thingy.  Wow.

Pardon my ignorance on this cell phone gadets tech, but if this thing runs OS X, why couldn't you just put regular entourage on it?  Is that type of functionality not possible for some reason on such a device?

Re: iPhone

I haven' been able to watch the introduction yet due to the fact that there is so much interest in it the server tells me to try again later. I have gone through the iPhone website a couple of times and I have to say I'm ditching my blackberry and going for the iPhone. With the email and the connectivity with the mac I have to do it.
When they say that it runs OS X I don't know what they mean by this. It has to be a very stripped down version in order to run on the limited amount memory. The widgets look great I hope we can install third party apps like the terminal shell.
I am surprised that there isn't any discriptions of the calender app. I see a Notes widget on the main screen but what about tasks? Will they be included in the email app as they are going to be in Leopard? On the site for email it stats will work with any IMAP or POP3 accounts. So why are they touting the yahoo mail so much is there more to the yahoo account than just push mail?
I do really need to find out more about this phone. When typing out an SMS message if you turn the phone does the qwerty keyboard get larger? Or does landscape mode only work for certain apps? There are so many more questions that I have but if none of them get answered I'm still going to be in line the day it comes out at the cingular store switching from t-mobile and having my blackberry go on ebay unlocked.

Re: iPhone

It all depends on what packages are available. I'm betting that you can just compile as long as the package dependancies and UI changes are there. Functionality should be able to be added. There is no way that they closed this off to developers. It would be suicide.
