My school actually has Macs!

I came early for my Java class and decided to pop on the forums for a bit and check my e-mail, so I head up stairs for the lab.  All PCs as far as you can see...but wait!  What do my wadering eyes discover?  4 Dual 2GHz G5's with Apple Cinema Displays!  I feel so much more at home now smile.  Oh, and www.macaddict.com was in the history when I got on it smile

Re: My school actually has Macs!

Mine has macs... and linux boxes. Every computing lab at my school has at least several Core Duo iMacs, and the calculus labs have stuff like Fedora Core running on their computers.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

Oh.  Well I live in Microsoft's backyard, so its hard to find a lot of Macs around here.  My other school had a few Linux boxes for students to check their schedules and all that as kiosks.

my former school used only macs. My new school uses only PCs, except for the Video lab which is full of all kinds of macs. I basically live there.

Yeah, I'm still in high school right now, and while there are only PC's in the classrooms and computer labs, the multimedia lab has 6 G5's with 23" cinema displays.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

My high school, the whole school district actually, is 100% Mac. Right now the school has about 400 ranging from old iMac G3's to the new intel iMacs.

All the student accounts are linked to a central server. That's great because you can get all your files from any computer on campus, but it sucks because the server is aways crashing. Always. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes just to login. Firefox never works, and files routinely disappear or won't save. It's a disaster.

I usually just bring my trusty powerbook G4 (almost 4 years old!) and try and avoid the school computers at all costs.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

My campus being mostly Macs is what got me interested in them. Now that I have gotten used to one, the school district that I work for is an  Apple Distinguished School.

This is taken from my school's website:
*** is a leader in the implementation of technology in the classroom. With over 2400 computers in the district, *** is proud to have one of the best student to computer ratios in the state. *** is adjusting to meet the educational needs of today's students by focusing its efforts in deployment of laptop computers, as recent technology trends have emphasized the importance of mobile computing. The 2006/2007 school year brings the addition of 300 laptop computers to the district for use in the classroom. Combined with the current laptop and cart inventory, the district has deployed three laptop carts in each elementary building, along with a dedicated computer lab in each building. *** Middle School has eleven laptop carts that are shared among the three grade levels along with a dedicated computer lab equipped for multimedia development. *** Junior High has five mobile laptop carts along with three dedicated labs, two of which are multimedia development labs. *** High School houses an entire wing dedicated to technology, with five labs dedicated to technology education. In addition to the Technology Wing, the High School has a dedicated Graphic Arts lab, as well as two labs associated with the Media Center. These numbers are supplemented by three laptop carts that serve as mobile computer labs. Each teacher is issued a laptop with training and access to a full time Technology Integration Specialist for assistance in incorporating technology into the curriculum. *** is one of the few districts to employ a Technology Integrationalist whose primary goal is to assist faculty in using technology to help enhance the students' educational experience.

All computers mentioned above are Macs! smile Gotta love 'em!

Re: My school actually has Macs!

It's funny, my school has all PCs.  Every single day we have some kind of technical problem with the computers.  This one kid always has to get up and help the teachers figure it out.  I just shake my head and laugh.  Should have gotten macs.

We have issues with the macs all the time - school computers by definition suck.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

The only mac at my school is a Mac OS 6/7.x in the gym. Kinda strange on how the IT say they will upgrade when there is a OS with low bug rate. confused

Thanks for clicking.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

I wish my school had Macs.  My day would feel so much better.  I guess school admins don't want Macs usually because it will cut down on what they will have to fix and thus put them out of a job?  I know my old school had an admin that would deliberately sabotage the Unix server just so he could have more work to do and be a hero to fix the problems he himself created.

When i was studying at uni, I had a multimedia subject, and the computer lab was a room of about 40 PowerMacs...  Plus, my high school had mostly Macs as well.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

The macs at my school take ages to login - like 5 minutes, it's sad.  That, and the Virex they have'm loaded up with is bullsmurf.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

At least its better than 15
And I know Macs don't take 15 minutes to start up
And yes I know the computers are loaded
Ours are loaded, but not with alot, I go look at all the stuff on the C drive
I wanted to ftp something at school (my webhosting service is blocked at school, and IP too) so I spent 15 minutes sloping around in the C drive and finaly found it! Click on it, "The system admin has blocked the comand prompt", one last try .bat files, and whdda you know I did it there goes 30 mins

P.S. did I mention I was 12?

Re: My school actually has Macs!

You can make any computer boot slow by loading tons of crap onto it.

My Windows/Ubuntu dual boot computer boots roughly the same amount of time in both OSes as my mac.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

The reason we don't have macs at our school is because the IT would not have jobs, the tech manager even said so.

Technical support and IT is NOT about service to their customers.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

The school district I went to for K-12 used to be solid Mac territory, but shifted over to Winders in the mid-90s. Running Netware. Solid bullsmurf. However, there is a lone bastion of Mac-ness, the digital media/graphic arts classroom my dad teaches in. There we have an Xserve and an Xserve RAID as well as 50-odd G5s for clients. I moonlight as the de facto sysadmin even though I no longer attend there. The teachers and most of the other staff became computer savvy during the Mac Dark Ages, so Mac reception is kinda chilly. It is funny to note all the pink Appletalk wiring in the ceiling tho. Relics of days past...

my high school had an entire lab of macs. it was pretty sweet. we even had a teacher who taught specifically on pc's and another only on macs, which was also pretty cool.

Re: My school actually has Macs!

The grade school district I went to, as well as my high school district were 100% Macs.  Last year I worked at the grade school district helping in the IT department and the school decided they were going to switch over to PCs.  The network they had set up with X-serves was beautiful, rarely had a problem.

I am working there again starting in a couple weeks (summer job), and I am almost dreading it.  From what I hear there are all sorts of things going on between the company that is setting up the network, the IT guy I work for who is all about Macs, and the administration. It should be fun.
