Re: Complaints/bugs about the forum design? Post 'em here

Heh He slipped in a confirmation while I was composing my post, in the post a reply page the never show smilies checkbox is just above the Subscribe to this topic checkbox. I'll double check if it's the same for the edit page (particularly for members) as well.

The yourgiftcentral.com ads have to go. They are extremely obtrusive and annoying.

Ads?  Just use ad block plus if you are on firefox.

PS.  It is incredibly difficult to read thread titles especially when they have new posts... The bold just all blends together for me.

actually, anything graphic that's wider than this new forum format will get cut off, Oatmeal posted a 3 panel cartoon that gets cut down to 2 panels shrug

But I remember the old green and purple format, that got fixed and I'm sure all these new found bugs will be too smile

I love the assumption inherent in the title of this thread, "Complaints about the forum design..."

Wasn't me:D

My only comment/complaint is that when I use Firefox's zoom controls to make the forum pages bigger, it "squishes" the message boxes as it makes the text bigger. So I could try a different browser or just deal with it.

See, I'm easy to get along with usually. I do like the new MacLife, both online and off.

Why did we need a new forum system? Nothing really wrong with this one, no complaints, but why was there a switch?

Re: Complaints/bugs about the forum design? Post 'em here

We are launching the new www.maclife.com on Monday, January 8, 2007.  We will be migrating the current www.macaddict.com forums as a part of the site launch.  The same PunBB software and all current data from the forums (users, moderators, posts, etc.) will be kept.  All the current www.macaddict.com/forums URLS should continue to work after the migration.  There will be only two changes: it will be hosted on a new server, and have a new skin to be consistent with the new site design.  We would be very appreciative to have some help from the forums administrators to be sure this migration takes place without any problems.

You woudn't believe how funky the server we had been using was.

If I correctly understood our esteemed Web Monkey, Nick Muerdter, the entire Forum app and database was running on an external drive attached to an Xserve after the Xserve's internal drive went south -- no redundancy, no nuthin'.

We had to reboot the sucker remotely (it was in SoCal) a couple of times a week, each time crossing our fingers (and often rerebooting, then rererebooting, and so on).  Three -- four? five? -- cheers to Nick and Niko for keeping the old Forums alive as long as they did.  And thanks to our new Internet Ops group for porting the whole sucker over with a minium of hiccups -- and thanks, also, to the moderators who helped debug the transition.

Now the Forums are safely ensconced on servers that our own company's Internet Ops group can administer, and all is well.  At least, if anything goes wrong now, we have full-time staff to attack the problem.

First we go MILF, now pop-ups.....does this mean we are evolving towards being a porn forum?

Yes, yes it does, see becuz the MAF was a family forum, but the MILF forum is an adult forum and as such will soon have porn that is made for the iPod blush

Re: Complaints/bugs about the forum design? Post 'em here

So when are the forums finally going to fill the whole screen on this massive 22" widescreen display I have?  They currently take up less than half that area.  I am getting sick of reading it all smashed up like that.  The Macaddict forums did that no problem.

That may be true, but it still should scale to fill people's monitors.  The Macaddict forums always did, so there is no reason this one can't.  Having a high resolution monitor makes everything small and hard to read.

Re: Complaints/bugs about the forum design? Post 'em here

Minor things.

1) Black text.  We need it... gray on gray stinks.
2) No fixed width.
3) Ads at the bottom instead of sides?  That's contributing to the fixed-width issue, methinks.
4) The background.  I just noticed it a second ago, and it's driving me nuts.  No gradient... just white or gray.
5) Theme selection?  There are many people out here that aren't CSS users, or just don't want to go through all that trouble.  Even just 3 or 4 styles would rule.
