'Jim Brown On Unreal Sniper Weapons'

From PlanetUnreal.

1/7/07 2:22 PST - General UT2007 News
BU points out that Epic’s Jim Brown has made a couple forum posts (one and two) discussing the sniper rifle and lightning gun. Perhaps more relevant, he notes that UT2007 will be sticking with the sniper rifle and not make a switch to (or include) the lightning gun (although he doesn’t insist that the lightning rifle will never find a place in future UT games). His comments are somewhat lengthy, but nevertheless here they are...

Lots of folks don't like it, tho- partly they prefer the superior camping potential of the trackless SR. The LG addresses that with its visible trail; but they are a tad redundant. Giving the SR a visible trail a la GoW also deals with that aspect. (Me, I still remember Unreal 1's SR originally being the Assault Rifle, meant to fire 3-round bursts, and written up in the game manual that way).

Re: 'Jim Brown On Unreal Sniper Weapons'

I want the GoW SR in all my games now.

UT's SR was good, Halo's was better, but now I think GoW owns'em all. One shot, pull down/back for the reload, reload timing is great, re-aim, fire rinse, repeat. Also the 'zip' of the round as it just misses your head, to the trailer feels perfect.

I am a little disappointed that the Longshot scope only has a blue glow, whereas even the Halo 2 SR gives you that miniature thru-view. You'd think UE3.0 could do better... and the Lightning Gun sets the target's head on fire. smile

Have you told Kirk just how much reloading is in GoW, and how important it is (active reloads, perfect active reloads)? http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/omg.gif

Result might look about the same. big_smile

(It do have a nice sound, and maybe even a realistic delay. I could've sworn I saw an orange flash t'other night from across Canal about 0.2 seconds before PuddleMonkey's shot asploded my brainpan... oh well, I keep her well annoyed with blind-thrown frags. Me can snipe too http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/DartMax.gif).

Meh that lil pict isn't so important...plus in the real world of optics the image from that distance would be upside down because of the convext glass. It wouldn't right it's self until you put your eye to it...that is if you could see anything at all. It changes from blue to red depending on who's holding it is good enough for me.

LG's flamming head shots are nice but don't offer the same level of satisfaction as the over the top squished grape/mellon explosion GoW has. Seeing half or a whold skull pop out of the mess is neat.

We're talking games, not real life, and 360 should be easily able to better an XBox 1 game's illusion of realism. DX9+ should be easily able to invert the image if you want that. Half-Life 2 used that sort of mechsnism, I think.

Ah, more real life optical effects... tongue UT2007 couldn't combine the two, with whole new levels of atomical plasma gibbleness? wink
