Why do I like Gears of War?

Generally, I'm not a big fan of FPS single player mode of games. I never really got in to any of the Quakes or Unreals, except for network games, and I mostly play games like Civilization and AoE.

But, for some reason, I really like the GoW singleplayer. The only reasons I can think of that would cause this are the good graphics. I really didn't pay attention to the story, and the game play is slightly more limited (not being able to jump is usually a deal-breaker for me in games) than I usually like, but there's a lot of little details in the graphics that set it apart from most other games of its type.

My point is that people like to say that graphics don't mean good gameplay, but well done graphics I think CAN greatly enhance the gameplay experience to make up for it.

I know, but it's FPS-esque.

Re: Why do I like Gears of War?

Good graphics definitely matter. Just like with audio, they do a lot to increase the immersiveness of the whole game experience. Doesn't GoW also have destructible environments? That also helps immerse the player.

There's really limited destructibility.  For the most part it's like a game of paintball, with blood.

Bodies do seem to be the most destructible; other things are hard to predict, hence usually don't seem worth wasting ammo on finding out except in replays... the 'janglies' smile are called Wretches, and really aren't that hard to kill. Even in Hardcore one good melee strike will do it (tho you have to watch out there; in Casual the Dark (Lambent) ones, who've had Imulsion exposure, don't explode too forcefully, but in Hardcore and Insane they take more bullets to kill and explode violently. Don't get caught in a crowd wink). Shotgun from the hip is fine, as is the revolver- the shottie & Lambents got me Clusterluck on the train (unfortunately under the generic 'Player' profile sad). I like piling 'em 8 deep with the pistol in the Fenix Estate basement. smile

Yeah, good sound and visuals definitely help. They can elevate the generic to greatness (I sure loves me some Troika action, and the chaingun vs. Reavers on the train... big_smile)

The cityscapes, other architecture e.g. House of Sovereigns & Tomb of the Unknowns, lighting, water effects (water facility, river), King Ravens... "...can't shake 'em. Gun One, take 'em down!" Some great cutscenes.

cool big_smile

It's not twitchy like Quake and UT but it's faster than Halo. True ya can't jump, but ya can run. Team work with up close and personal warfare. Chainsaws & 'nade tags & the most perfect Sniper Rifle I've had the joy of shooting...not to mention the over the top, grape sqishing, mellon busting head shots. There's a lot to love in this game.

However...we need more maps and game types.

Re: Why do I like Gears of War?

I don't know, looking at the player models (Does Marcus look like a bunny hopper?) and the way the game is played, I don't see how a jump button would enhance the experience. I think it would even degrade it.

That's true because the game is explicitly designed not to need really need to jump, but in general, people are able to jump, and I should be able to do so in a game.

The gravity of Sera does not allow jumping...not even a little bit. Problem solved. big_smile tongue

On the other hand what about dodging. UT got me hooked on that and I miss it dearly in other games. To see an Elite dodge in Halo but not have the power to do it myself is frustrating too.

Re: Why do I like Gears of War?

Not being able to jump even a little does annoy me. It does serve several game purposes, at least two related to art & graphics- it limits the resource usage and art asset creation needed. Really, who wouldn't take the opportunity to, say, hop the wall at the Fenix Estate and just wander around? 360 has 'only' 512MB RAM and games can't cache on the hard drive (Core systems don't have one), so the maps, geometry, textures etc. can't be too large and complex.

Example: The East Barricade Conservatory ('Bad to Worse'). Jack rips the door... look thru. There should be a tree- there isn't, from even a moderate distance. Run towards the door. Tree pops in; run up to it- within a short time you'll see a smooth-boled tree acquire several texure effects and much detail, but they may take a few seconds to load from the DVD.

Another effect on gameplay- the physics let weapons be blown all over, but because you can't jump nor even mantle more than a couple of feet up, that needed torque bow in the bushes may as well be on the moon. hmm

Well, you can leap over obstacles in that game. Considering that you're carrying 50-100 pounds of armor and crap, I don't see why you'd want to do much more then that.

And people are also able to skip and poop, but that doesn't mean having those things in a game will enhance gameplay. shrug

Jumping ≠ bunnyhopping, which I hate. In GoW, tho, you can't even step off a ledge >3' high, or mantle (not jump) up the same height for any reason- if there's something like a weapon you want, and it's on a 4' high ledge or low dropoff, it's out of reach. You even need to step off a 2'-3' ledge at nearly 90 degrees, or you won't move. And with the physics, many things get blown around to normally reachable places you can't reach.

As for carriage, just look at 'em- your average Gear may be just that, but all the hero-types are like 6'6", 275+ pound bodybuilding types who who toss around huge guns like the Boomstick like they were toys. (Marcus looks, sounds and acts like CliffyB's Bizarro universe alter ego, all buffed on growth hormone, 'roids and protein shakes hmm).

Yeah, a little reasonable jumping would add to gameplay & fun, but not only increase resource reqs but probably complicate the already awkward cover system with another variable. That may be the biggest reason it's not in.

Not to worry, it's the good, Max Payne-type of 3rd-person. And forced looks, scope views etc. are first person.

Re: Why do I like Gears of War?

Since many of us can't get enough GoW, there's 8 pages of CliffyB at IGN to chew on. Here, a snip on downloadable content.

More DLC on the Way

IGN: I think there is a need for more modes. I know people are happily playing Gears online right now. I know people who don't even really play that many games who are now online playing Gears of War every night. That's success. But don't you think there is a need for a greater versus diversity?

CliffyB: Look man, you can only play kickball after school for so long before you want to start changing up the rules and everything. And we're Epic, we've done Unreal Tournament and we've done all sorts of sequel to that, and we've released bonus packs and if history is any indication, then nudge nudge, wink wink, we might be working on something like that.

IGN: Any time in the Q1 or Q2 time frame?

CliffyB: Gears is one of those games that, how do I explain it, I think there is a lot more of what we can do with cover and the variety of what can be had within the game space.

IGN: Are you talking about downloadable content or a sequel?

CliffyB: Um…Xbox Live is great. It's essentially an umbilical cord that's connected to all of the gamers and your fans. You have customers and you have them hooked, and we are looking at finding other ways at keeping people playing the game. So, keep your eyes peeled.

IGN: So, nudge nudge, wink wink, we will get more downloadable content and that content might alter the variety way in which gamers take cover?

CliffyB: Laughs. Anything is possible, man.

IGN: Well, you do have plans for more downloadable content, right?

CliffyB: We're looking into it. We support our products. And I want to play more Gears of War content on Xbox Live when I go online. So darnit, I think it will happen at some point.

Re: Why do I like Gears of War?

I expect so. Last words, p.8:

IGN: For all those people who have been playing the hell out of Gears of War and are expecting downloadable content in the not-too-distant future, is there something, some little gem, you can leave them with? You know, for your fans?

CliffyB: Hmmm… Look at Epic's history with Unreal Tournament. Look at the Bonus Pack; we're a company that stands behind our product and we support them far longer than most people expect because we love what we do and we love supporting the product we make. Keep your eyes peeled. There should be some news soon.

My under.

Re: Why do I like Gears of War?

For those who still can't get enough (GoW)...

Now is the time to shoot Epic's Mark Rein in the head

I don't play much Gears of War online anymore. I was good when the game first came out, but now I'm so out of practice that even other Ars Technica players laugh at me and call me names. I'm a sensitive soul, so I've stopped playing with those bullies. In reality I'm just trying to make everyone on my buddy list feel good so I can get some co-op Crackdown going this weekend. At any rate, if you think you're good at Gears of War online, on the 24th you can try your hand playing the game's developers. Here are the gamertags to look for:

Mark Rein, Vice President - EPICEMEAMR
Cliff Bleszinski, Lead Designer - EPICEMEACB
Rod Fergusson, Producer - EPICEMEARF
Lee Perry, Lead Level Designer - EPICEMEALP
Jim Brown, Level Designer - EPICEMEAJB
Dave Nash, Level Designer - EPICEMEADN
Ray Davis, Lead Programmer - EPICEMEARD
Joe Graf, Programmer - EPICEMEAJG
Rob McLaughlin, Programmer - EPICEMEARM
Pete Hayes, Artist - EPICEMEAPH
Additional Epic Staff - EPICEMEA01, EPICEMEA02, EPICEMEA03, EPICEMEA04, EPICEMEA05

Cliffy B may be a talented designer, but you have to admit at least once you've wanted to put a shotgun round into his smug little face. This gives you a shot at doing just that. Either that or you'll get humbled by people who know the game balls to bone. I wonder if they often play their own game online; I have a hard enough time re-reading some things after I've written them. I'm sure many of my readers would agree.
