Re: It's official: Obama enters run for presidency

Probably because he is unknown. He's done little in the Senate so far.
His record in IL was fairly liberal but pretty much followed the crowd.

Damn it, I was on another forum talking about Obama, and I was keen to get peoples opinions on the guy, if they thought he would have a chance, what his strategy would be, etc. But instead the discussion turned into talking about if he was african-amiercan or not.

So I come here, to a real political forum looking for some relevant discussion.

And I get the same thing!

That might be an indication of how people take him.  He's a light weight, through-and-though.  People see that and fuss about non-essentials.  If he actually had a plan (or had any substantial record as a senator so that people could judge his ideas) they'd talk about that.  Instead, they talk about mean-nothing stuff, because there is no mean-something stuff to discuss.

For Gods sake, the guy has gone by the name Barry and he's insisting on Barrak now?

Looking at those pictures, I'm guessing there's a lot he wants to forget, and a lot of mistakes made.

A lot of people drop childhood names when they enter professional life.  That's about the dumbest comment I think I've ever read of Kevin's.

The guy is getting crucified for his name(s).
I hardly think using the "american" name you went by in your youth is a stupid solution to stop some of that crap.

He probably stopped using Barry in law school or something, not necessarily knowing he was going to wind up in politics.  Anyway, that particular name of the three is the one that is NOT mocked.

Re: It's official: Obama enters run for presidency

How long's he been using Barrack though? The name may only be a "problem" recently because some people are trying really really hard to make something out of nothing.

And he could have dropped "Barry" years ago simply because it's a dimunitive. Like Timmy. Fine for a kid, not so fine for an adult.

Bottom line, it's his damn name. Just because some idiots want to make a fuss over how close it is to Osama is no reason he should suddenly be pressured to change it.

The whole damn name thing is beyond idiotic. If people have issues with his political stance, I can accept that. But his name? Come on... This is utterly insane and stupid.

Re: It's official: Obama enters run for presidency

Yes, it is idiotic to complain about his name or his race, but remember, he has to get  the idiots that voted for Bush to vote for him. And his name probably doesn't help to sway said idiots.

What I want to know about the guy is why is he so popular? Why are all the news stations talking about him? What has he said or done that makes anymore interesting of a candidate than anyone else?
It seems he would have had to have done something pretty smurfin' spectacular to get past the red states' bias towards his race.

He speeks good.

More relevantly, he's not hillary, which is something I'm looking for in my presidential candidates.

He looks more human than almost all the canditates.  Who cares if he snorted coke in college and smokes; at least he has the balls to say he did it instead of some lame ass excuse about not inhaling.

He seems to be quite smart also, something I think we can agree the current administration lacks immensely.

Or claiming youthful indiscretions about events that happened while he was in his 30s.

No, that's not how you devise your porn name.  You combine your first pet's name with the name of the street you lived on as a kid.

My name is Shep Prospect.

Ok, yeah, that's why I like him too, but why does the press like him so much? Why does he have so much hype? Can't be just because he's maybe black, Sharpton runs in every election and doesn't get this kind of attention.
The media isn't doing a very good job of not looking liberal to the FoxNews as- I mean - smurfholes.

I mean, it'd be great if attention was given to candidates because they seem intellegent and respectful, but all that didn't help Gore any and he lost to the dumbest sounding idiot of all.

I thought maybe he had done something or has a strong opinion on something that makes him standout. But I guess maybe he just gets media attention because he seems like the best chance for us liberals and the media isn't trying to hide anymore in hopes of actually making productive change?
