What was your first Mac???

I saw a post today from a recent Mac "convert" today and it reminded me of last year when I got my first Mac.  I was curious what people's first Mac's were and what their experience was with them.

Although I always preferred Macs over PCs, I hadn't seen anything before that I could justify the initial expense.  My first Mac was just last year when they released the MacBook.  The moment I saw it on the website I fell in love with it.  In fact my MacBook was the last one of the first batch of 20 black MacBooks the store closest to me had gotten in.  I swear they got sick of me calling every other day asking if they had gotten any in yet.

It was when I got it home and started working with it, everything changed.  It was a little rough at first, but in a good way.  I had to get the rule through my head "it's always easier on a Mac".  Everything I wanted to do was always easier than I thought it would be.  Even the initial setup was incredible.  In 45minutes I had everything set up, was hooked up to my home network, signed up for .mac, and even had all the updates installed.  I had set aside so much time thinking it was going to be really difficult that all I could do for the next little while was stare and "oooo" and "ahhhhh" at it.  I was stunned into inactivity...lol

It took me months just to explore the software built into OS X.  Every time I thought I needed to get software I found out I could do it with the built in software.  It wasn't until recently that I started going beyond the basics and looking for advanced stuff to use on it.

My first mac was an LC630, back in 1995.  My mom still uses it for bookkeeping!

Re: What was your first Mac???

Mine was a Performa 550, back in 1993.  I used it all the way until 2001!   (Eight years ain't bad for computer longevity.)

Then I bought an iBook in 2001, which is still going strong.  (Six years for a laptop ain't bad, either!)

Re: What was your first Mac???

I bought my first Mac in 2002 and still use it today. It's a 700 Mhz eMac G4. I just recently upgraded to OSX 10.4, upped the RAM to 1 gig, and installed a new 120 gig HD. It's like a new computer.

I was going to buy a new Mac this spring, but the change in my eMac is so amazing that I may hold off until December or next spring.

Macintosh Plus, in 1992 - although I had used them before that, dating back to around '89, and my dad bought his SE in 1990.

Re: What was your first Mac???

The Macintosh 128k or 512k (thanks dvpierce)...probably the earlier.

Oldest running...the Mac SE/30 (or at least I think it still runs...haven't tried it in awhile.)

Cheers,
ptervin...ah, to be old

Re: What was your first Mac???

Performa 6320CD (they added the CD part at the end because it was such a big deal that it had a CD drive).
Man that thing was unreliable even when it was brand new. But I was so excited to have it! I still have the TV tuner card from it as that was the best part of that machine.
That Sears Card I bought it with will finally be payed off this year!!!!

Re: What was your first Mac???

My family's first machine was a Mac II back in 1988. None of my PC-using friends would believe it had 5 MB of RAM and displayed 256 colors. The first I owned personally was a Power Mac 8500 in 1995.

You know it! big_smile Did you know there's a remake on Xbox Live Arcade? It includes a "classic mode" with all of the original graphics and sounds; I just wish it had the Totally Silly mod.

Re: What was your first Mac???

Performa 6360, back in, what, '95?
I bought it at Best Buy, and the sales guy tried to get me to buy an IBM by saying, "Apple is a niche market. You don't want one unless you are going to make a tv comercial or something like that." Well, THAT dissuaded me!
Anyway, when I got my iMac DV in '99, I put the Performa in my sons room, and somehow he managed to get maple syrup down the fan holes and onto the logic board!
P.S. After having a couple of iMacs, I can say with confidence that the 6360 was a piece of smurf!
Also, that during that time when I was trying to make up my mind which way to go, I picked up a copy of Mac Addict (#2) and I was so taken by the magazine's attitude that I knew right then that I had to go Mac!

Mini (Intel) 2006 returned for iMac (Intel) 2006.  Bought a MacBook (2006) and sold iMac towards MacPro (2006).  And now I'm good and happy until my computers can't do what they need to do anymore, or I can't have the newest OS.

Classic II.
I loved the little creature, I wrote a book there.
A thing of beauty...

After that, LCIII, a Performa 8500... iBook tangerine still working, and a iBook 800mhz, still doing its duty at home.

I'd have to agree. I thought I really needed it back then when I was in college so I could get my graphic design work done. All under the impression that with a college degree I could get a design job that will more than pay for the student loans and credit cards i had to live off of in school.
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
9 years after graduating, I've made no progress on my student loan and don't make enough money to ever buy a new mac.
I just bought my Sawtooth used from my office last year for $75.
I was broke for two months after that.
