Johnny Cash covers Nine Inch Nails

Just happened to see the video of Johnny Cash doing Hurt, the guy has always been on the fringe of "out there" , this video just proves it more, so surreal in a way...

anyone else catch it?

I heard the song.  Quite honestly, I liked his cover of "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden better.

Re: Johnny Cash covers Nine Inch Nails

Yeah, I've heard it. It was already a fairly haunting song to begin with, but I think with Johnny Cash's age and the experience in his voice make it that much more effective. It makes it a much sadder, more poignant song. Don't get me wrong, Trent Reznor's version is powerful, but this one just blows me away. Really good stuff.

Johnny Cash is amazing. katy bought me a box set for my birthday a couple of years ago, and I keep them with me all the time, instead of rotating them out like I do other music. His version of Hurt is one of the most poignant and powerful songs I have ever heard.

Cash is cool.  cool

He is one of the most respected artists out there, and for good reason.  Come to think of it, I don't know anyone who really doesn't like him.

I didn't catch the video, but I downloaded the mp3. Not bad. NiN was one of the last bands I expected him to cover though smile

not only are Cage's covers of both NIN and Depeche Mode on American IV good, they're better than the originals.

Re: Johnny Cash covers Nine Inch Nails

I honestly think I am the only person on the planet who does not like Cash's version of "Hurt".  I casually mentioned that on another forum and I went down in a ball of flames.  Don't get me wrong, I love Cash's old stuff, but this CD is not doing it for me.  Give me "Cocaine Blues" any day.

I think country singers who try to be "hard" need to stop being country singers, frankly.

Check out Joy Division's Closer if you want some real music.

Eh, nice try, but anyone who just "checks out" Joy Division is gonna come back and ask you what the hell is up with that guy's voice!!

I love Joy Division, don't get me wrong, but they are definitely an acquired taste. I played "Atmosphere" for my girlfriend because I think it's a beautiful song -- all she could do was roll her eyes at Ian's voice. Ah well.

I love Joy Division, but that doesn't mean I don't think Cash is a smurfin genius.

I agree with you and I've had that same problem.  I sent "Atmosphere" and "Dead Souls" to a friend of mine, those are maybe my two favorite Joy Division songs, and the only response was "what is wrong with that guy singing?"

Fools.

Re: Johnny Cash covers Nine Inch Nails

Cash's "Hurt" is fantastic.  He conveys extreme depth of emotion to it, both in video and audio form.  He has always been an excellent artist, hinging on the "alternative" most of the time.  I enjoy alot of his music, including his early works...how can you not like "Fulsom Prison Blues", "Ring of Fire", and "A Boy Named Sue"?

There are only a few covers that I truly appreciate, but this is one of the best.
