File sharing btn 10.3 and WinXP over router
Your help is appreciated
I've a Mac running 10.3.9 and want to share files between a computer running WinXP. We're both connected via a router. What's the simplest method of sharing files and what are the steps?
Also, in WinXP, i need to identify specific folders i want to share. Can i do this using 10.3 or is it only access to files in the 'drop box' folder? Thanks

Re: File sharing btn 10.3 and WinXP over router
Read the Mac and XP help. It has the answers. Really.
The Public folder and the Drop Box folder are for sharing files between accounts on one computer not for file sharing over a network between two or more computers.
On your Mac go to the Sharing preferences.
Start Windows file sharing.
Note the address of your Mac given at the bottom of the Sharing window when you enable Windows file sharing.
From your XP computer enter that address into the Add Network Places wizard. Put in your user name and password when asked. The XP computer now has access to your entire Home account on the Mac.
On the XP machine enable file sharing. Select the folder(s) you want to share. Right click and select Sharing. Enable sharing and set passwords if desired.
From the Mac select Go to server (command-k from the Finder).
Type in the Xp machines network address.
Select which folder to access.
Authenticate, if asked.
There are other variations on this procedure.

Thanks for the reply, Dunkin'
I've already looked on the internet for tutorials like: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html but my Windows computer still can't find my Mac. My Mac can find the Windows machine.
Also, I want to share a specific folder(s) on my Mac, not the entire HD. Windows XP can do this but I still haven't found if that's possible for the Mac.

I think you can use SharePoints for that. Google for it.
(Sometimes Windows XP can take forever to find another computer on the network.)
Check your firewall settings on the Windows machine. That is the most common reason for lack of connections.

Re: File sharing btn 10.3 and WinXP over router
What's not mentioned in the tutorial that you linked to is a shortcut to connecting to a SMB share from Windows XP.
Open up a new Explorer window, and just type \\192.0.2.77\share in the address bar and hit return. Obviously, you need to replace "192.0.2.77" with the real IP address of your Mac, and "share" with the name of the share you want to connect to.
SharePoints will let you fine-tune the SMB share setting on MacOS X client, or you can be brave and edit the /etc/smb.conf
Something else to take note of: The default SMB workgroup for any standard MacOS X installation is WORKGROUP. This used to be the default workgroup for Windows installations, too, but now I think its something like XPHOME. Check the workgroup settings on both machines.

Re: File sharing btn 10.3 and WinXP over router
Thanks for all your help. Is there anyting that's step-by-step and very easy to follow? Is there another website? A book? I really don't understand what SharePoints is asking of me and i've looked at the documentation. I don't understand why the SharePoints documentation shows that i need to have 'apple remote desktop', 'personal web sharing' and 'remote login' turned on, in addition to 'personal file sharing' and 'windows sharing'.
All i want to so is to set OS X 10.3.9 to share SPECIFIC folders with WinXP users over a router. We're connected by ethernet.
I don't want anyone to have admin, root access to my computer. I want only those 2 WinXP users to have access.
It's incredibly easy to do this task on WinXP but i'm very lost with all the settings in SharePoints. Thanks for your help
