One of my friends tried installing the Express Upgrade disc on his 2 m/o PC. It refused to upgrade from XP MCE, so he battoned down the hatches and went for the fresh install. Now his PC won't POST. He contacted his manufacturer, and they're sending out a guy on Tuesday to replace the mobo. And yes, this was a Vista ready PC!
WTF!!? I'd have assploded if installing Vista smurfed my motherboard. I can't even see how that could happen, but the manufacturer apparently implied it wasn't uncommon. Weird.

what does it mean that the computer won't post?

I really don't understand how they can be proud of Vista. Obviously it tries to mimic Mac OS X - something that can't really be denied. However, when you look at a video of what they really had in mind for Longhorn, Vista is even more of a failure. The demo of Longhorn 2003 is really very, very impressive!!!

Yeah, that was when it was still Blacksheep. Apple took that as what was coming out and basically Tiger was going to be the one to compete with it. Apple's implemented all that stuff, MS just sat there and chopped it all.

You see, what happened? I mean seriously. That's some good looking stuff right there. The kind of friendly animation Apple would put in their OS. Yet when Apple puts it in, they actually put it in and keep it in. Why did MS take it out? Or was that all just thrown together from scratch to represent what they wanted the OS to look like, then realized they couldn't actually implement it?
I mean, some of that stuff was really cool to watch. The animation of the photos dropping down then flying into their slots. The way the sidebar appears from top to bottom. I dunno. Microsoft takes concepts and treats them as such. Concepts. Apple takes concepts and applies them to the real world. There is our difference.

I call this behavior "Next version FUD": to prevent people from abandoning your product, you promise them the moon with the next version. When the next version is actually released and is lacking many of the promised features, you tell the dissenters that the next version will have them.

Or you can just support really good games on your platform. That seems to have worked very well.

so as Vista increases market share, we may see more games being run on the Mac OS instead of windows.

I think my favorite was this one:
newsweek wrote:
How about the implication that you need surgery to upgrade?
Well, certainly we've done a better job letting you upgrade on the hardware than our competitors have done. You can choose to buy a new machine, or you can choose to do an upgrade. And I don't know why [Apple is] acting like it’s superior. I don't even get it. What are they trying to say? Does honesty matter in these things, or if you're really cool, that means you get to be a lying person whenever you feel like it? There's not even the slightest shred of truth to it.
I love that he calls Apple a bunch of liars when nothing in any of their commercials is even close to dishonest, yet a couple of questions before this he flat out lied about OS X. I think he is losing it.

I thought it was just the mouse concept that apple copied from xerox.
nope
pretty much the whole GUI concept was Xerox back then
The thing to keep in mind is that Xerox had no intention of bringing this interface to the consumer market. Actually, the fact that Apple made both the hardware and the software is what enabled them to sell a machine that not only had a GUI but a GUI that was usable. Notice that Windows didn't become usable until over 10 years later because the hardware had to catch up to what the software was trying to do.

Here is the icing on the cake:
newsweek wrote:
So you feel in 2010-2011 Microsoft will be back with the next big one?
Absolutely. We'll tell you how Vista just wasn't good enough, and we'll know why, too. We need to wait and hear what consumers have to tell us. We don't know that, otherwise, of course, we would have done it this time.
He is discussing the next version of Windows and how they are all ready to tell you how much Vista sucks in order to get you to upgrade. I laughed out loud when I read this. If I had been drinking milk it would have come out through my nose!!!

Re: Gates lies about OSX & Vista
I still fondly remember the time that a company put a Mac running System 9 on the internet, and offered $1000 for anyone who could hack it, and modify the site.
Microsoft tried to emulate it and their site went up and was down in 2 hours, because of technical difficulties, whatever they were. They never did get thier site up for thier challenge. The closest anyone came to hacking into the Mac was by using a social engineering attack through the the mail to a company employee.
No one ever collected on that challenge, even though it was extended past the 1 month deadline.

Re: Gates lies about OSX & Vista
"Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine. - Bill Gates, February 02, 2007,Newsweek"
Well Bill that has not been done to a Mac, but on your dare it has been done to a Vista OS already.
"Quite disturbing were recent revelations that Microsoft's own Live OneCare antivirus program, tailored specifically for Vista, is unable to block many well-known computer viruses. Another antivirus package from McAfee also fails to do the job. This fulfills predictions made in early 2006 by antivirus firm Symantec (maker of Norton AntiVirus) that, because of Microsoft's failure to provide ways for antivirus programmers to fully integrate their products with Vista, many antivirus programs would have a hard time protecting Vista users. I guess that includes Microsoft, as well."
