Illegal immigration: Do you support it?

I just want to get your viewpoints on illegal immigration.

Re: Illegal immigration: Do you support it?

Why would anyone support the existence of illegal immigration?

A lot of people would like to have immigration laws loosened, allowing more people to come in, legally. Others want stricter immigration laws, or want the ones we already have to be enforced more strongly.

Almost no one likes the status quo of strict immigration laws and shoddy enforcement with millions of people living in the shadows.

Give it the veneer of legality.
You need it.

You need the cheap labour. You need their consumption of goods. You need them to send dollars out of the country.

I am against it. We have way too many Canadians working here who aren't legally in the country.

Re: Illegal immigration: Do you support it?

It's a problem, but I'm not really sure how we can stop it.  Building a West Bank style fence along the southern border would be costly.  We should offer a guest worker program - not just to Mexicans either.

There should be a guest worker program.

Re: Illegal immigration: Do you support it?

One of the biggest problems with illegal immigration is that since they are illegal, it is easy for employers to take advantage of them.

With a guest worker program, they would be here legally, and their labor could be better regulated. Not just for fair wages, but for work conditions, physical abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse, etc.

I also think their should be a path from guest worker status to legal citizen if they want it.

There could also be cheap boot camp housing for them instead of them cramming 12 people into an $800-a-month studio.

Not to mention that many of those who come here as legal guest workers would eventually go home.  They would also probably be less likely to bring their families with them.

People come across together and stay permanently because it has become too risky to go back-and-forth.

A guest worker is an amnesty no matter what it's called. I personally don't oppose it as long as there is a fine but don't think will solve or reduce illegal immigration. There already are many types of temporary worker visas (too many that it's ridiculous). Maybe the regulations should be changed and the process should be simplified to reduce waiting time.

Define what you mean by "amnesty."  I can see how any program which would augment the legal status of those already here illegally could be considered a type of "amnesty," but not as it would apply to new workers going forward.

"an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offenses"

Like I said, there already are many types of worker visas. I don't see the need for reinventing the wheel. It's like the Real ID proposal. Pointless.

...so then fix the problem.  Who cares what name it's called if it works?

I don't know how familiar you are with guest worker programs that were run here in California (and other states) in the past.

They got on a bus in Mexico. They came up to California to work. Then they got on a bus headed back to Mexico.

It allowed those without jobs in Mexico to get jobs in the US during certain times of the year - but it was not an amnesty program. When they job they came up to do was over, they went back home to Mexico.

They're probably under agricultural worker visa (or something), which I believe is capped. If it is, the program still exist.
