I need a new DVD Burner
I know iDVD used to be a pain to find a supported drive for. Can I use any DVD Burner as a supported superdrive or not? Here is the one I was thinking about

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
You might check xlr8yourmac.com's drive compatibility database, but I think the days of Pioneer dominating the Mac world are over.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
You can use pretty much any DVD burner -- just get Patchburn. I have a Samsung DVD burner in a LaCie enclosure (originally housed an old CD burner) and it works fine with Patchburn. Can burn with Finder, iTunes, iDVD, etc.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
I can't believe I found this topic today. I bought an LG DL DVD writer the other day hoping it would work with a USB connector. It reads but won't write. The place I bought it from doesn't have a good return policy so I thought I was out the money. I will give PatchBurn a try tonight. Please cross your fingers for me.

Oops.
Unfortunately, PatchBurn doesn't seem to work with an LG GSA-H42N drive.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
That sucks. I'll assume you did restart.
It works more often than not but it doesn't always get everything, particularly if it's a very new drive. At this point your options are pretty much get another drive or wait for the next version of PatchBurn and try again.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
I restarted MANY time last night trying to get that drive to work. It figures that I would buy one of the few drives that doesn't work...
...now I just have to figure out if anyone I know with a PC needs a DVD burner.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
I have a 1.5 GHz G4 Powerbook with 1 GB of RAM...
I have the drive connected with one of those little gizmos that plugs into the IDE port and then makes it USB. The drive works to READ but not write.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
that the set of cables/adapters OWC sells to take a caseless drive and hook it USB?
if so, mine works the same way with an optical.. read only. and the optical I hooked to it was the original that came in my Mac.
so I buy USB/FW cases for most of my extra drives.

Do you mean a drive hooked up with the adapter cable thing that didn't work DOES work in a case??

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
nope, it works great on a hard drive, but not an optical drive (CD/DVD)
so I just buy external cases and stick my drives in there.
as far as the optical, it's a pain to convert one imo.

No, I meant, you had an internal optical that didn't work with the cable but did work when it was in a case??

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
yup, but I had to gut the optical from the original case first. ( make it nekkid like a bare hard drive )

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
dunno.. patchburn was already installed back when I re-flashed the drive to what it really was ( Apple downgraded pioneer) that came in the G5 DP powermac originally.
so being patchburn was there already, dunno if it would have worked without it.
and I was too lazy to find out on the other G5's in the house.

Well, thanks. I found an old Firewire drive that I might as well try out with this DVD. What the heck. It can't make it any worse, right?

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
Well holy crap!!! I had an old 60GB Firewire HD lying around. I took it apart and popped in the DVD drive. (no special work on the drive itself was necessary) It worked first time, and without PatchBurn. I'm shocked. I only have 8x DVD-R around (the drive is an 18x). A whole DVD from toast in 6 minutes. I don't think I can complain.
Thanks so much for the help, all!

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
Well, it was just a 60GB drive... what the heck is that good for anymore? haha
And I can still use the HD with the little USB converter thing that didn't work on the DVD.

Re: I need a new DVD Burner
Yeah, 60 really is enough for most people. But, like I said, I can still use the HD. It's just USB now rather than Firewire. AND I have an 18X DL DVD for $42 Canadian. Pretty sweet. hehe
