setting up linksys wrt54g as an access point? help!

So i'm trying to set up this router as an access point for my macbook on my current network.
I've disabled the "DHCP server" setting, and i gave the router a local ip of 10.0.0.222. i've set up the wireless part with WPA security, etc, etc.
My macbook sees the network and seems to connect but it won't load any pages. I opened the network utility and the ip address the router assigned my macbook was 169.254.58.140, which i think might be part of the problem.
I have successfully used my macbook on many other wireless networks. i know very little about networking, so if you have any hints please be as layman friendly as possible.
thanks in advance, dudes.

I have the same router, MacBook & 2 Tivos on the network. First, you shouldn't have to assign an IP to the router itself, let your cable/DSL/whoever assign the intitial IP. If you have to manually assign IP addresses to the networked devices, disable the DHCP and order them as 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101, etc. Honestly though, DHCP should work fine.

Once you let the router get an initial IP from your provider, and the router sees the MacBook, it should resolve to a proper IP. Hopefully.

Passwords may not be comparable between the Mac and the Linksys. Use hexadecimal rather than a passphrase.
And the Linksys shouldn't be using a different password than the rest of the network. The wireless part of the network should have one password assigned by the router.
Other than that follow Mr. Happypants comments as long as ONE device is set to distribute IP addresses.
The 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is a self-assigned address not from a router. So your Mac is not on the network. Try disabling all security features and prove that you can access the network then add one piece of security at a time. Check for network access after each change.

How is this router connected to the network? Through the WAN port? You should realize that communication between the WAN interface, and the LAN/Wireless side isn't bridged and must got through the routing features of the WRT54G.
The LAN ports and the Wireless should be bridged together, letting them pass data without having to go through the routing features. Try connecting everything to the LAN side of the WRT54G, and leave the WAN port unconnected.

thanks for your replies,
like i said i know very little about networking so i'm not sure i understand all of your advice.
i'm trying to leave my existing wired router set up and use the WRTG as an access point/hub only, so nothing is connected to the WAN port. the WRTG currently works fine as a hub, only the wireless aspect is not working.
all of the wired PCs on the network need to be set up manually to use 10.0.0.1 as a gateway and self assigned ips (all in the 10.0.0.x range), not using the automatic settings.
i'm at work right now but i will check back when i get home.
thanks again.
