Re: your fav free application
Xmenu, XMenu brings the much-loved Mac OS 9's Apple menu back from the dead, adding its functionality to Mac OS X. Adding one or more global menus to the right side of the menu bar lets you easily access your preferred applications, folders (and subfolders), documents, and files, just like the good old days..

Re: your fav free application
VLC is a must because it can play just about any format. That's a good thing. There are more (alot more) media files besides iTunes content that needs playing, and VLC allows for it.
i don't understand most things
i don't really want to
i just want the strength
to keep fighting it

My current favourite free application, one without which my productivity would plummet:
VirtueDesktops. Virtual desktop manager.
The rest:
1001. Desktop client for use with Flickr.
Adium. Universal IM client.
Chmox. .chm reader.
Colloquy. IRC client.
dead.licious. Verifies that your del.icio.us links are still valid.
iScrobbler. Submits iTunes data to last.fm.
iTerm. Terminal replacement.
Licensed. Keeps track of serial numbers.
OnyX. System maintenance.
Quicksilver. Uh.. it does everything.
sidenote. Brilliant little note taker.
Songbird. Media player, MP3 blog reader.
TigerLaunch. Menubar-resident launcher.
Transmission. BitTorrent client.
VLC, already mentioned.

You could use both.
Use Unarc. for everything except for what you have to use Stuffit for.

Yeah, I can't wait for Spaces. Having that functionality built into the OS will no doubt provide more stability than VirtueDesktops does; but in the meantime, it's really great.
Here are some more:
Pathway. An application that archives the path followed through Wikipedia by creating a graphical "network" representation of visited articles, that can be saved to disk and reopened.
gDisk. Software that turns a GMail account into storage space.
Podsize. A Dashboard widget that checks the dimensions of a video prior to encoding, ensuring that it is iPod-compatible.
Quinn. Tetr-- uh... "Falling blocks game" with network play.
Type Cast. Font preview Dashboard widget. Quickly move through font families, styles and sizes using the keyboard. Presents font info and reveals font in Finder.
Hallon. Create menubar-accessible bookmarks in applications that don't support bookmarking, like a favourite track in iTunes or an e-mail that requires a reply by the end of the day. Open the source by selecting its bookmark in Hallon's menu.
KeepAnEye. Multi-purpose monitoring and notification utility. Tracks an unlimited number of data sources and displays data in desktop stickies, the menu bar, or the Dock.
Pixen. Graphics editor for pixel artists.
iSquint. iPod video converter.
Enjoy.

Piracy and comes with the computer, respectively.
Blender certainly ranks among my top free applications, along with Cyberduck, gvim, and Apple's developer tools. I don't think I use any non-free applications in my daily computing. (that is, assuming you count the regular apps that come with OS X as free)
